"Silas, you regret it, don't you?"
"You regret treating me well."
"You regret crossing the line from being just partners."
"You regret giving me that wedding in Switzerland."
"And now you've suddenly woken up, and you don't know how to hit the reset button."
...
Silas remained silent for so long that Alaina was certain he was dodging the question again. When he finally spoke, his voice was so low it felt wrenched from the very depths of his soul. "I don't regret a single thing. I'm not an impulsive man."
He paused, his gaze landing on her tear-filled eyes, and a barely noticeable tenderness bled into his tone. "I haven't been avoiding you on purpose. I just needed time to think... to weigh whether or not I'm going to end up destroying you."
Destroying her?
Alaina froze, the indignation and fury in her chest rapidly giving way to sheer bewilderment.
It had never crossed her mind that this was the reason behind his evasion.
Seeing the raw exhaustion and restraint in his eyes, her heart softened, and her tone lost its edge. "You can talk to me about what you're afraid of, instead of just hiding from me like this."
Silas looked up at her, a chaotic mix of guilt, affection, and faint relief swirling in his eyes. He let out a long sigh, as if a crushing weight had been lifted off his shoulders. "I'm sorry, Alaina. I shouldn't have put you through this."
"I've never been this indecisive in my life."
"I still need time to figure this out."
"Can you please just give me a little more time?"
"Once I have my head straight, we'll talk."
Alaina looked at him without a word. She simply stepped forward and gently took his hand in hers.
His palm was slick with a light sweat.
"It's okay," she murmured comfortingly. "I'll wait until you're ready."
"I know you have your reasons."
