Pierce stood up. "Sebastian, you're here." He reached out to take the flowers from Sebastian's hands, fully adopting the posture of a host welcoming a guest.

Sebastian turned and handed the flowers to Franklin instead. "Go put these in a vase."

Pierce's outstretched hand hovered awkwardly in the air for a second before he pulled it back.

Only then did Sebastian look at Pierce, asking casually, "Didn't you say you were heading back to Riverport this afternoon?"

"I did, but then I heard Riley got hurt, so I rushed back."

Sebastian gave a brief nod and looked at Riley. "How are you feeling?"

"I'm fine. Just some scrapes. Sorry to make you come all this way, Sebastian."

"Next time you save someone, make sure you secure your own safety first. Otherwise, all your medical expertise won't do anyone any good."

Riley paused. Pierce had just been lecturing her, telling her not to do dangerous things anymore because she wasn't alone and had Alora to think about. She knew Pierce was just concerned about her.

But she hated that kind of concern.

She was a doctor. Healing and saving lives was her duty. She couldn't just stand by and watch someone jump off a roof just because it was dangerous. Even if she had to do it all over again, she would make the exact same choice.

But Sebastian was different. His words resonated with her perfectly, as if he understood her ideals and ambitions.

Being understood and validated like that felt wonderful.

A genuine smile graced her lips. "Mhm, I'll remember that, Sebastian."

Sebastian felt that Riley's smile in that moment was almost unfairly beautiful. That gentle, kind light shining straight from her heart into her eyes was so bright it was dazzling, leaving him momentarily entranced.

Pierce let out a soft sigh. He had just spent all that time talking to Riley, and she had completely ignored him, focusing solely on eating. But the moment Sebastian spoke, she took it straight to heart.

He really had hurt her too deeply, so deeply that she still couldn't let it go, let alone forgive him.
