One of her words—or perhaps the tone in which she said it—seemed to irritate Clifford. His brow furrowed, and he shot her a warning glance.
Yesenia pretended not to notice. "Oh, fine," she said, pouting. "Let's go. You promised you wouldn't do anything else for a few days and just spend time with me."
Clifford pocketed his phone without another word and followed her.
Naturally, word of Clifford’s business trip with Yesenia made its way back to Santino and Renata.
Renata was fuming. "How can he have the gall to be off with his little mistress at a time like this?" she griped. "The nerve of that man."
Santino merely smirked. The reason was obvious: Clifford wanted to keep his hands clean.
"Santino, this whole thing seems to be blowing up," Renata said, walking over and handing him a tablet.
They had moved out of the Lambert estate the day before and were now settled in their own villa. With the change of scenery, Renata's mood had improved considerably, and the lingering guilt she felt over Yolanda had all but vanished.
Santino glanced at the news article on the screen before handing the tablet back. "That's to be expected. This is no small matter. Reuben lost both of his children; he's not going to let this go."
Reuben had fed the story to the media, ensuring it received widespread coverage. Now, with public scrutiny at an all-time high, the Lambert Group's stock price was plummeting.
"How is Dad doing?" Renata asked.
"It doesn't look good. When Yolanda went to see him that day, did she call him beforehand?"
Renata thought back. Yes, Yolanda had called Wallace that morning. "She did."
"There you have it. Many of the staff saw her on the phone with him. Combined with how hastily he transferred the shares into his own name, he's now the prime suspect. If the kidnappers aren't found, he might…"
"Relax, we left Etherea City a long time ago," the man on the other end replied. "We're men of our word, Ms. Lambert. Now, about our money… when are you sending the other ten million?"
"You'll have to wait until the heat dies down," Renata said. "I can't make a large transfer right now without raising suspicion. Don't worry, I won't stiff you."
She had briefly entertained the thought of having them killed, but she knew that would only create more problems. It was better to just pay them off.
But the man wasn't satisfied. "Ms. Lambert, you have to at least give us a timeframe. How long do you expect us to just sit around and wait?"
"What's the rush?" Renata snapped. "I said you'll get your money, and you will! Now, tell me this: how did those three end up dead?"
"You're the one who told me to kill them!" the man retorted. "Don't tell me you're trying to pin this on me now, too!"
