He looked at Yesenia, his smile unreadable. “And so?”
“There is no ‘and so.’ I’m confused right now. If you won’t marry me, I can’t find a single reason to justify staying with you.”
Clifford just watched her, saying nothing.
“Look, Clifford, just tell me,” she pressed, “do you even like me?”
“Does it matter?”
“Of course, it matters! If you don’t like me, you have nothing now, and you won’t marry me. Don’t you think I’d have to be crazy to stay with you?”
Clifford nodded thoughtfully. “You’re right. You have a point.” He paused. “Get out of the car.”
The last few words hit Yesenia like a physical blow. “What?”
“Get out,” Clifford repeated. “And don’t contact me again.”
“You…”
Suddenly, Yesenia couldn’t speak. Even though she had weighed the pros and cons and prepared herself for this, hearing those words from him sent her heart plummeting into an abyss. It was like being plunged into ice water. An immense panic washed over her, and her face went pale.
That was it. True feelings couldn’t be faked. Her heart had already given her the answer. She was truly in love with him, so much so that she couldn’t even convince herself to leave. On impulse, Yesenia grabbed his arm. “Clifford, I…”
Before she could finish, Clifford cut her off. “You did nothing wrong. Any normal person would think the same way you do, so there’s no need to say anything more.”
Yesenia whispered the last part, her voice small and full of humility, but the words came from the bottom of her heart. She couldn’t let go of Clifford. She loved him. She was desperately in love with him. Only now, when she had stripped away all the vanity and materialism and was faced with true separation, did she finally understand her own heart. Even she found it unbelievable that she could love him this much.
Clifford stared at her, his expression unreadable, the smile gone from his face.
To prove herself, Yesenia grabbed her purse, pulled out several credit cards, her apartment keys, and her car keys, and dumped them all on the dashboard. “You bought all of this for me. I’m giving it back. You can sell it all; it should be worth something.”
Clifford glanced at the pile of items but remained silent.
“Oh, and when I get paid for my latest project, I’ll give you that money too,” she added quickly.
“You’ve already made me famous, so I have some name recognition now. I’ll take on more roles, or I can do live-stream shopping if I have to. I’ll help you pay back the debt!” Yesenia spoke in a rush, her face flushed and her eyes welling with tears as she stared at him.
