Clifford sat there impassively, his eyes flicking toward her. He wore no expression, but Latisha felt a chill from his gaze, a silent warning. She bit her lip and quietly looked away.
“Mr. Lambert, your assistant looks like a student. Is she even legal?” someone joked. “You really know how to live.”
Clifford looked at the man coolly. “And how would you know she’s a student?”
The man paused. “So she really is a student?”
Clifford let out a humorless laugh. “Gentlemen, with your impressive tolerance, you hardly need assistants. I’d say you could all drink until dawn without breaking a sweat.”
“Hahaha, we’re getting old. Health comes first. We can’t drink like we used to. Besides, this is just a get-together, not a battle to the death.” The man’s tone shifted. “But since we’re having such a good time tonight, it would be a shame not to spice things up. The drinks lose their appeal otherwise.”
“That’s true, but…” Clifford turned to Greyson. “If you were going to call my assistant, why did you call this decorative piece? Are you trying to see me lose?”
Greyson raised an eyebrow, his expression calm. “My apologies. I wasn’t aware you had any other female assistants on your floor besides Ms. Judd. But I believe looks can be deceiving. As soft as she appears, Ms. Judd must have her own strengths to be your assistant. She won’t necessarily lose. Right, Ms. Judd?”
Being called upon, Latisha stiffened. She had never drunk alcohol before, let alone competed with these people. She would lose for sure.
She didn’t know how to respond, and couldn’t, so she just looked at Clifford. Everyone else was looking at him too.
Clifford lit a cigarette and leaned back lazily. “What if I lose? And what if I win?”
The man who had spoken first replied, “If we win, then the terms of our partnership will have to change. How about we add another five points in our favor?”
