chapter 115
Marcus’s eyes sharpened instantly.
The moment he noticed the van ahead and the sudden way its headlights flared directly at them.
The van was aiming at them, and the taxi driver was still completely oblivious, humming faintly under his breath as he kept driving straight into danger,
“Watch out!” Marcus shouted.
The driver jerked in shock. “Huh?”
But it was already too late.
The van suddenly shot forward like a beast let loose, charging straight at them with terrifying force.
Marcus reacted without thinking. He lunged forward from the back seat and grabbed the steering wheel with one hand while yanking the driver sideways with the other. The taxi swerved violently off course.
Screeeeeech!
The tires cried against the road.
The van blasted past them by inches, clipping the front side of the taxi with a violent bang that sent the whole car shaking. Metal scraped against metal. Betty screamed and grabbed the seat as the car spun slightly before the driver slammed hard on the brakes.
Steam began hissing from the front of the taxi almost immediately.
For one second, nobody moved.
The driver sat frozen behind the wheel, his eyes stretched wide with terror. “What the fuck…” he whispered hoarsely.
The van remained still for a brief moment ahead like whoever was inside was checking whether the hit had worked. Then, realizing the taxi hadn’t overturned, it sped off into the night.
Marcus’s breathing was heavy, but his face remained cold. That had been too deliberate to be an accident.
He turned at once to Betty. “Are you okay?”
Betty was still pale with shock, her whole body trembling badly. She looked like she hadn’t fully returned to herself yet. After a few seconds, she managed to nod.
“Y-Yes… yes…” she whispered. “I’m okay.”
The driver was still shaken, staring at the road ahead like he had just seen death itself.
“Was that man drunk?” he muttered, still trying to process what had happened.
Marcus didn’t even bother answering that nonsense.
“Just drive,” he said flatly. “Quickly.”
The driver swallowed hard and nodded at once. He restarted the car and forced it forward despite the damaged front, desperate to get away from the road before something else happened.
Not long after, they reached an intersection and the taxi finally stopped.

Marcus pulled out cash and handed the driver enough to cover both the fare and the damage to the vehicle, even though none of it had been his fault. The driver was grateful
“Thank you, sir. Thank you!” he said quickly before driving off without wasting another second.
Now it was just Marcus and Betty standing by the roadside. Betty let out a long breath and touched her chest, still trying to calm herself. Then she suddenly frowned.
“The document,” she said. “we didn’t even get time to review it.”
Marcus looked at her and said, “Tomorrow. We’ll do it.”
Betty nodded slowly and again, she wanted to give her back the necklace.
Marcus looked at the necklace still in her hand.
“Keep it,” he said.
She sighed, knowing he wasn’t going to take it back. “Fine. I will keep it. But if you ever need it one day, just tell me and I will return it.”
Deep down, she still couldn’t understand it. To her, it was insane that Marcus had spent over $5.6 million on a necklace and then casually handed it to her like it was nothing.
Marcus only nodded.
After that, they said their farewells and Betty left.
Marcus had barely taken a few steps alone when his phone suddenly started buzzing nonstop in his hand.
He looked down and saw it was Jessica. Message after message kept pouring in.
Are you okay?
Hey, are you there?
Did you escape?
Marcus reply me!
Please say something!
There were over thirty messages waiting for him.
Marcus stared at the screen for a moment, then let out a quiet sigh. Whatever else Jessica had done to him, this time she had saved his life.

So he finally typed back.
[I’m safe. Your message got to me in time. You saved my life].
The reply came almost immediately, as if Jessica had been sitting there staring at her phone and waiting.
[Good. I told you this money you’re suddenly spending would bounce back hard. Now they are trying to kill you.]
Marcus stared at the message, then scoffed softly under his breath. Even now, she still believed all of this had to do with him getting money through some shady means.
He didn’t bother explaining anything.
