Chapter 146
Travis quickly shook his head, panic written all over his face.
“Jessica, listen to me! That’s only what Mr. Smith told me. I believed everything he said too. I got fooled just like you.”
He took a step closer, his voice filled with desperation.
“Think about it. If I were part of his scam, why would I still be here? Why wouldn’t I have disappeared with him?
Jessica’s eyes were bloodshot from crying, but they burned with anger.
“So now what?” she snapped. “You were the one who convinced me to invest! You kept defending him every single time I had doubts. If it wasn’t for you, I would never have handed over my money.”
Travis bit his lips.
She pointed toward the front door.
“So you would better find him and get every cent of my money back. Until then, pack your things and get out of my house!”
Mrs. Morgan immediately stepped between them.
“Jessica, calm down,” she pleaded. “Travis is a victim too. Mr. Smith deceived him as well. You can’t just throw him out.”
Jessica turned to her mother in disbelief.
“Mom, why do you always take his side?”.
“Marcus didn’t even do a little of this before you have me sending him away!”.
Her voice cracked with emotion. “Do you even realize how badly this will affect me? I invested almost everything I had! If I don’t get my money back, and people find out I got scammed, do you know what that can do. My reputation will be ruined!”
Mrs. Morgan gently held her daughter’s shoulders.
“Nothing like that is going to happen,” she said softly. “We will figure something out together. Travis is just as heartbroken as you are.”
Those words completely broke Travis.
His knees gave way, and he sank onto the floor, tears welling in his eyes.
“Jessica…” he said hoarsely. “After everything you’ve done for me… I would never intentionally repay your kindness like this.”
He lowered his head in shame.
“Yes… I acted recklessly. I thought I’d found a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I wanted to help you… and maybe prove that I could finally do something worthwhile for you.”
He clenched his fists. “I was fooled too.”
Looking up at Jessica, he spoke with determination.

“I swear to you, I’ll find Mr. Smith. I’ll do everything I can to track him down. Until then… if you don’t ever want to speak to me again, I will accept it.”
Jessica stared at him for a long moment, her expression as cold as ice.
Finally, she let out a furious hiss.
“You’d better.”
Without another word, she turned and stormed upstairs, leaving Travis kneeling silently on the floor as Mrs. Morgan looked on with a heavy heart.
As Jessica disappeared upstairs and the sound of her bedroom door slamming echoed through the house, Mrs. Morgan immediately rushed to Travis.
“Oh, babe…” she said softly, helping him to his feet.
She brushed the dust from his clothes and gently straightened his wrinkled shirt. Her face was filled with concern as she looked him over.
“Are you alright?”
Travis forced a bitter smile and nodded weakly. “I’m fine.”
Mrs. Morgan glanced toward the staircase to make sure Jessica was no longer around. Once she was certain, she leaned forward and gently pecked Travis on the cheek.
“Don’t take her words to heart,” she whispered. “She’s just hurting.”
Travis lowered his head and let out a long, defeated sigh.
He had spent so long trying to find a way to win Jessica’s heart, only for him to kneel for her today after she slapped him, so humiliating.
He laughed bitterly.
Mrs. Morgan gently rubbed his shoulder. “Don’t worry, you will be okay living here.”
Travis determined to find Smith, because that would be his only way of getting back to jessica. But, obviously, he would have already be out of the country.
The following morning, the entire city erupted with shocking headlines.
“Popular Female CEO Falls Victim to Massive Investment Scam!”
“Vortex CEO Allegedly Defrauded by Fake Langstone Representative!”
“Police Confirm Wanted Con Artist Duped High-Profile Businesswoman.”
The video secretly recorded outside the police station had somehow found its way onto the internet.
Within hours, it spread across every major social media platform and news outlet.
Millions watched the heartbreaking footage of Jessica collapsing into tears after discovering that the man she had trusted was a wanted criminal.
The public exploded with reactions.

Some sympathized with her while others mocked her mercilessly.
“If a CEO can be scammed this easily, how can she protect investors’ money?”
“So she couldn’t even verify who she was investing with?”
The scandal sent shockwaves through the financial community.
By the time the stock market opened, panic had already set in. Investors began dumping Jessica’s company’s shares in massive numbers.
The stock price fell rapidly to Thirty percent.
Then it became a complete freefall.
