Chapter 195.
Betty noticed the growing disturbance near the table and quickly trade her way through the crowd. Her steps were steady, her expression calm and professional
“Sorry,” she said as she reached them, voice clear enough for the nearby guests to hear. “How can I be of help? What’s happening here?”
Cory turned toward her at once, still gripping the wine bottle. He wasted no time launching into his story, voice loud and full of outrage. He claimed Marcus had deliberately brought him abottle containing sulfites despite knowing his severe allergy. He insisted he never requested the wine. Mrs. Leah stood beside him, nodding firmly in support of every word.
When Cory finished, Betty looked at Marcus.
Marcus met her eyes without hesitation. “It’s a lie,” he said quietly. “He asked for this exact bottle by name. I refused at first, checked the system, confirmed his Platinum access, and only then brought it.”
Betty studied his face for only a second. She knew exactly who Marcus was. He did not lie about things like this. He did not forget details. He would never risk a guest’s life for any reason.
She turned back to Cory, tone polite but firm. “I’m sorry for the inconvenience, Mr. Harrison. You must have requested the wine and later forgotten. That still doesn’t excuse the fact that the allergy wasn’t properly checked beforehand. Please forgive him for that oversight.”
Cory’s face flushed deep red. His voice rose sharply. “Who the fuck are you really? Who the fuck do you think you are?”
Betty remained composed. Cory’s eyes dropped to the small badge on her chest. Event Manager. His expression twisted into a scornful smile.
“You’re just an event manager,” he scoffed. “You two are colleagues. Of course you’re covering for each other.”
Mrs. Leah stepped forward, arms crossed. “I even told you I saw it myself. And you’re still arguing? You should learn to shut the fuck up.”
Cory slammed his palm hard against the table. The crystal glasses rattled. “In fact, I’ll escalate this right now. Someone get me one of the executives here!”
Almost immediately a sharp-dressed man appeared from the side of the hall, moving with quiet authority. His suit was impeccable, his presence commanding. The moment he saw Cory, recognition flashed across his face. Cory recognized him just as quickly. After years of partnership with Langstone, nearly every senior figure knew Cory Harrison.
“Good, Thomas, good,” Cory said, voice still heated. “This man here-”
He launched into the same false story again, pointing at Marcus and the bottle, claiming deliberate endangerment and a cover-
Thomas listened in silence. When Cory finished, Thomas slowly turned toward Marcus. His eyes narrowed the moment they landed on him. Recognition settled across his face at once.
Thomas’s eyes widened the moment he fully recognized the man standing before him. Marcus Langstone-the true owner of the entire empire-stood there in a staff uniform, expression calm. Instinct made Thomas’s body lean forward, ready to bow deeply, but Marcus gave the slightest shake of his head and a subtle hand signal at his side. Thomas immediately straightened, forcing his face back into polite neutrality.
If it had been any ordinary staff member, Thomas would have already raised his voice in anger. He did not dare. He kept his tone measured.
“Hmmm… I am sorry,” Thomas said carefully. “But are you certain of what you are telling me, Mr. Harrison?”
Cory frowned, clearly offended. “Mr. Thomas, I have known you for years. Do you think I would lie about something like this? Of course not
