Chapter 196
The whispers continued to spread through the banquet hall as Cory stood there with an increasingly awkward expression. What actually happened was that, There was no body camera. Not a single member of the event staff had been issued one that evening.
His eyes shifted toward Marcus, who simply maintained a calm expression. In that instant, Thomas understood exactly what had happened. Marcus had never intended to play any footage. He had merely thrown out the existence of a body camera, knowing that anyone telling the truth would have nothing to fear. Cory had panicked the moment he heard those two words and had immediately started changing his story.
He had exposed himself. Thomas almost smiled, but quickly suppressed it.
“I believe,” Thomas said calmly, “that you owe this gentleman a proper apology.”
Cory frowned.
Thomas continued without raising his voice. “Not just an apology. I think you should bow your head and apologize sincerely.
You falsely accused him of deliberately trying to kill you. That is an extremely serious allegation.”
The smile on Cory’s face disappeared.
He folded his arms across his chest and let out a scoff.
“Look,” he said, “I already admitted I made a mistake, didn’t I? But he’s still just a member of the staff. You’re asking me to bow to him? Don’t push it.”
Thomas’s expression remained unchanged.
“You lied,” he replied. “You repeatedly insisted he tried to poison you. You demanded that he be dismissed immediately. If we had believed your words without question, an innocent man could have lost his livelihood. Now that the truth has come out, you’re refusing to apologize?”
Cory shrugged without the slightest hint of guilt.
“Yeah. I won’t.”
He glanced around the room before looking back at Thomas with complete confidence.
“And let’s not forget who I am. I am one of Langstone’s VIP partners. you may be an executive here, but you don’t have the authority to remove my membership or tell me what to do. So no… I won’t bow.”
Several guests exchanged disappointed looks.
Someone quietly muttered, “He still doesn’t think he did anything wrong.”
Another guest shook his head.
“So much arrogance.”
Thomas slowly inhaled.
Part of him wanted to tell the man exactly who Marcus really was. One sentence was all it would take to wipe that arrogance from Cory’s face forever.
But he couldn’t. Marcus had made it very clear that his identity was to remain hidden.
Just as Thomas was about to speak again, Marcus calmly stepped forward.
“It’s alright, sir,” Marcus said with a faint smile. “The misunderstanding has already been cleared up. Since no real harm was done, I think we should let it end here.”
Thomas looked at Marcus for a long moment. He understood immediately.

Marcus wasn’t letting Cory go out of kindness.
He simply didn’t want unnecessary attention focused on himself.
After a brief silence, Thomas let out a quiet sigh.
“If that’s what you want…”
He turned back toward Cory.
“Very well. Since Mr. Marcus has chosen not to pursue the matter, we’ll consider this incident resolved.” Cory secretly let out a breath of relief.
The banquet slowly drew to a close as the last of the guests began leaving the hall. Staff members moved from table to table, clearing empty glasses, folding tablecloths, and packing away decorations. Marcus quietly gathered a stack of plates, his movements as calm as they had been throughout the evening.
Footsteps echoed behind him. Marcus didn’t even need to turn around to know who it was.
Cory stopped a few feet away, a smug smile spreading across his face. Now that there were far fewer people around, the confidence he had lost earlier seemed to have returned. “So,” Cory said with a chuckle, “you got lucky today.”
Marcus continued stacking the plates without looking at him.
“I would’ve ruined your life tonight,” Cory continued. “That little job of yours would’ve been gone if things had gone my way.”
Marcus finally looked up at him. “So, you admitted it,” he said calmly. “You lied because you wanted me sacked.”
Cory didn’t bother denying it. “Yes.”
A proud smile appeared on his face. “I don’t like the fact that you’re with Julia. So I wanted her to see how useless you really are. Once you lost your job, she’d finally realize what kind of man she’s dating.”
Marcus let out a quiet scoff. “You don’t know Julia at all.”
He placed the last plate onto the trolley before looking directly at Cory.
“Even if I were jobless… even if I had nothing to my name… if Julia wanted to stay with me, she still would.”
Marcus shook his head slightly. “She isn’t the kind of woman who judges people by their career or status. She’s a good woman. And she deserves far better than someone like you.”
Cory’s expression darkened. “Oh?” He stepped closer.
“And who deserves her? You?”
Marcus met his gaze without the slightest hesitation.
“You shouldn’t be concerned about my career…You should start worrying about yours.”
Cory frowned. “What the fuck are you talking about?”
Marcus’s expression remained unchanged. “Your partnership with Langstone is already over.”
