Marcus stalled for a moment and simply stared at Wilson’s outstretched hand without saying anything.

Wilson smirked. “Go on. Take it. I don’t hurt people again.”

Back in school Wilson had been the terror of the class and the only person who stood up to him consistently was Marcus. Now Wilson was broader, taller, his arms thick with muscle and ink. He

mistook Marcus’s silence for fear.

Marcus kept his eyes on the wrist.A cold weight settled in his chest.

Slowly, he reached out and took the hand.

Wilson’s grin widened. “Yeah. That’s it. You see? I don’t hurt again.”

He turned to Julia and looked her up and down with open hunger. “Wow. Still as pretty as ever.”

Julia forced a small smile as Wilson was licking his lips. Marcus eyes never left Wilson’s face.

“What are we waiting for?” Wilson finally stated. “Let’s go in.”

He maneuvered them through the glass doors and into the private room at the back of Velvez Bar where the reunion was already in full swing. Music thudded from a speaker in the corner. Laughter bounced off the walls. Almost everyone from their course was there.

“Ohhh yeah… Jessica is here!”

Several girls rushed forward immediately to hug her. Jessica slipped into the attention easily, they were all treating her royally. She was clearly the most successful among them now and they treated her with visible respect. Well, that what they thought.

No one even acted like Marcus and Julia had entered.

Except Damien.

He hurried over. “Oh man, you came! I’ve been calling you. you didn’t pick up”

“I was a little busy, sorry” Marcus replied.

Damien greeted Julia warmly and gave Marcus a discreet wink. He was obviously pleased seeing them together.

Then a voice cut through the chatter.

“Wait. Are you two together now?”

Ivana.

She had always been talkative and skilled at siding with whoever seemed to be winning. She stepped forward with a curious smile that did not reach her eyes.

Ivana cut her off. “I saw you both at the Langstone banquet. You’re definitely dating. Don’t pretend.”

Another girl added, “Wow. That’s fast. Just weeks after Jessica?”

Julia scoffed. “That’s not what you think. Let’s forget that and just enjoy what we are here for”

Across the room Jessica caught Ivana’s eye and gave her a subtle nod. indicating that she should

continue.

Ivana smiled. “Why shouldn’t we talk about it? Just weeks and you’re already with your mate’s man. Isn’t

that shameful?”

Julia’s jaw tightened. “Ivana, watch your mouth. We haven’t even started and you’re ruining the mood.”

“The one ruining the mood is you,” Ivana snapped. “You collected your mate’s man.”

“|—”

Marcus gently took Julia’s hand and lifted it to his lips.

The room went quiet.

“Yeah,” he said calmly. “I’m with her now. She’s my woman. So what’s wrong with that?”

Shock spread across the faces around them. Jessica’s expression darkened instantly. Even Julia swallowed hard, her heart racing.

Marcus looked around the room.

“For your information, Jessica and I are not getting back together. And I can be with any woman I want.”

Silence followed.

One of the men at the table sneered. “You are shameless. You are even openly proud of it. After everything Jessica has done for you.”

Another voice joined in. “You were literally nothing without her.”

Jessica said nothing. In fact, she leaned back slightly, watching it all unfold like entertainment.

Ivana crossed her arms. “You didn’t even have a job when you were with her. I’m sure you jumped on Julia out of desperation. She’s probably the one feeding you now.”

Damien’s face tightened. “Hey. That’s enough. Jessica, talk to them.”

Jessica only tilted her head, silent, a faint smile curling at the edge of her lips.

Julia frowned. “I don’t get why you’re all talking about this. We came here for a get-together, not this

nonsense.”

Ivana snapped instantly. “Shut up! From school you never liked Jessica because she was above you. More wealthy, richer, prettier than you. And now she has even surpassed you in life. You’re just jealous, so you stole her man.”

A ripple of agreement moved through the room.

Travis chuckled from behind Jessica. “Not to mention the necklace incident before he left”
