If things went south, their act was over. They had been leaning on this connection to rake in a lot of benefits. The original plan was to use the Quinn family name as a reason to grab whatever they could, assuming the Quinns’ reach wouldn’t extend this far down. A massive family like that had bigger things to worry about than the business of people at the bottom, and they certainly wouldn’t care about the small change being pocketed.
Nobody expected Natalie to have actually met Felix Quinn, let alone know that Ronald wasn’t part of the family. It completely wrecked their plans.
Lana barked at Nina in a low voice. “What are you panicking for? Even if Natalie knows them, so what? Mr. Felix is busy every single day. Do you think he’s going to listen to the nonsense of some little girl? Use your brain for once. You let Natalie outshine you again today and you’ve made me look like an absolute idiot.”
They had come here to make Natalie look bad, but after a few rounds, they were the ones looking like clowns. Lana couldn’t swallow that. Why did Natalie get such a good life just by being born into the right family? She didn’t even show her own aunt any respect. Lana was so angry she wanted to charge over right then and tear Natalie apart.
Natalie hated these events. After walking a lap with her parents, she slipped away to eat desserts. She checked her phone and saw that Jackson still hadn’t replied to her message. It had been several hours now, and he clearly wasn’t going to. She didn’t believe for a second that anyone could be so busy they couldn’t find a few seconds to text back over several hours. He had seen it and was ignoring her.
She sighed to herself. Who was the one who said chasing a man was as easy as a layer of gauze? She had taken ninety-nine steps forward, and Jackson wouldn’t even take the final one. Instead, he just kept backing
away.
Her patience was running out. She was usually someone who only had a three-minute heat for anything she did, and she had already stayed persistent with Jackson for longer than usual. He just didn’t appreciate it. To even get a few words out of him, she had studied all kinds of strategies online, but the man was like a block of wood. No matter how she teased him, it didn’t work. He either gave her a few words or nothing at all. She was close to quitting, but she wasn’t quite ready to give up yet.
When the party ended, Natalie didn’t wait for her parents and left on her own. The place was too suffocating. Whether it was old friends or relatives, everyone looked at her like they were wearing colored glasses. It made her skin crawl. Even though they didn’t dare say anything because of her parents, those looks were enough to make her uncomfortable.
By the time she got home, showered, and went to bed, Jackson still hadn’t replied. The message had just sunk to the bottom of the ocean. She held her phone, wanting to send something else, but she kept typing and deleting, not knowing what to say.
Right then, Leon called. She jumped and her finger slipped, accidentally picking up, Leon’s voice came through thick with the sound of someone who had been drinking. “Natalie, how long are you going to keep this up? Why did you push Susan today?”
Natalie gave a short laugh. “Leon, if your brain is sick, go get it treated. I don’t have time for your games. My time is valuable, unlike yours, which you spend messing around with women.”
