Maloney's lazy, deep voice drifted over from the front of the car.

The words died on Nora's lips.

She winced.

She mechanically turned her stiff neck, slowly looking up at Maloney, entirely speechless.

Maloney took a long stride forward and tugged at the door handle. It was locked. He reached through the open window, hit the unlock button, and opened the door from the inside.

From opening the door, unbuckling her seatbelt, to being carried out, Nora didn't dare utter a single syllable.

She was terrified of getting scolded.

Maloney simply tossed Nora's keys to Silas's driver to handle the wreckage.

He carried her into another car.

They settled into the backseat together.

Nora couldn't even look him in the eye.

Her guilt was compounding by the second.

She angled her body away from him, her miserable little face pressed toward the window. Outside, she caught sight of Cassidy, who was visibly holding back laughter in the distance.

Nora: "..."

How dare she laugh!

Her phone vibrated twice in her pocket.

"Didn't you claim you didn't care about Maloney and Seraphina's past? Seeing them talking, did you want to run them over?"

"No!"

"Everyone standing by the door saw you rear-end that car."

Nora was dying inside: "This is all your fault for asking me to come!"

Cassidy completely ignored Nora's misery and sent an innocent sticker.

"While you were gesturing wildly at that driver, your husband stood at the front of your car staring at you for at least thirty seconds. The driver kept glancing at him, and you were completely oblivious."

Nora typed back: "Blind spot, okay?! When you're leaning out the window, you can't see what's in front of you!"

Cassidy: "Just admit it. You do care, and you're terrified he'll figure it out."

Nora stopped replying.

She felt embarrassed, suffocated, and totally lost.

It was the awkward mortification of having her secret little insecurities exposed.

Honestly, it shouldn't have been a big deal.

She had texted Maloney earlier to say she was outside. The other driver bore some responsibility for the scrape. As long as Nora didn't admit she was distracted and just claimed she braked too late, Maloney wouldn't have been able to fault her.

Her instantaneous panic had ruined everything.

She couldn't handle reality.

Cassidy's texts were still firing off like a machine gun.

"It's fine. Honestly, judging by your husband's reaction, he cares about you a ridiculous amount."

"Even my mother-in-law was praising him for being such a good man."

"The second he recognized your car, he practically sprinted over."

"Not replying, huh? Do you still want to know what Seraphina said to him?"

Nora gritted her teeth and typed back a single, frustrated word: "Yes."
