Cassidy wasn't buying it.

Of course, she didn't want to meddle too much in another couple's marriage.

And ultimately, it was just an ex-girlfriend issue.

But the moment Maloney and Seraphina were mentioned in the same breath, Cassidy got extraordinarily worked up.

Nora understood.

Since her evening work had been canceled anyway, she had nothing on her plate. She and Cassidy hadn't seen each other in over a week. Going over to catch up and then riding home with Maloney sounded like a perfect plan.

The hotel hosting the gala was situated in a premium, secluded slice of downtown.

Driving there required cutting right through the city center.

There seemed to be some massive event happening at a nearby plaza, creating a gridlock. Nora sat in traffic for twenty minutes before finally merging off the main road.

By the time she reached the hotel, the gala was wrapping up.

Nora texted Cassidy: "I'm here."

Cassidy didn't reply.

She didn't answer her phone, either.

She was probably busy.

It was getting late, and Nora was worried Maloney might leave early and they'd miss each other, so she quickly texted him to say she was waiting outside.

Maloney didn't reply immediately, either.

Nora debated whether to call him.

She glanced up toward the hotel's main entrance, just in time to see several people walking out.

Maloney, Cassidy, and Seraphina were all there.

Quite the full house.

Maloney was walking with his friend, Cassidy was beside her mother-in-law, Bridget, and Seraphina had a small entourage of her own.

It seemed the party had just dispersed.

Nora lightly tapped the gas, planning to pull right up to the main doors to pick up Maloney.

Just as her car crept out of the surface lot, Seraphina waved goodbye to her companions and suddenly spun around, marching briskly toward Maloney.

Nora's gaze was instantly hooked.

Seraphina looked like a peacock in full display. Her voluminous curls bounced wildly with every step. Her chin was tilted upward, exuding confidence and arrogance with every gesture.

She walked right up to Maloney, seemingly exchanging just a couple of sentences, before tossing her hair over her shoulder and strutting away without a backward glance.

Nora stared wide-eyed, completely mesmerized by the scene.
