"It's the same logic," Maloney Jameson said.
"You just don't get it," Nora Dodge replied.
Maloney lowered his gaze, looking right at her.
"What are you looking at?" Nora had been sneaking glances at him too, and caught in the act, she clamped down on her straw. "If you don't want to wait, you can head home first."
Two sentences in and she was already chasing him away.
Before Maloney could respond, the piercing shriek of a crying child echoed behind them.
A young mother hurried down the glass corridor, carrying a wailing toddler.
Nora glanced over her shoulder.
"Do you want kids?" Maloney asked suddenly.
Nora froze. "Uh..."
She thought about it for a second. "Do you?"
Maloney noticed that whenever Nora encountered a question she didn't want to answer, she'd deflect with another question.
"Nora, I'm asking you," Maloney repeated. "Do you want kids?"
"If you want them, I want them," Nora said.
"..."
He remained silent for a few seconds before declaring, "Alright, then we'll have them."
"We'll start as soon as we get home. We'll conceive today, you'll give birth next August, rest for half a year, get pregnant with the second the following November, give birth the August after that... We'll keep going until you're thirty-five. We'll have seven kids."
"..."
"Wait, hold on a second." Forgetting her iced drink entirely, Nora widened her eyes in shock and grabbed Maloney's arm. "You want that many?"
"Yeah." Maloney flipped his hand over to grip her wrist, pinning her lightly against the corridor railing. "You said it yourself. If I want them, you want them."
"I mean, yes, I said that, but—"
"No buts."
"..."
When Cassidy Quinn arrived at the hospital, the first thing she saw was Nora trapped in Maloney's arms.
