The Divorce That Brought Us Back novel Chapter 123

The suffocating tightness in Parker's chest grew more intense by the second.

Unable to stand being in the empty house any longer, he spun around and stormed out, slamming the door so hard the walls shook.

He wanted to find Cassidy.

He needed to confront her face-to-face.

But when he dialed her number again, she ignored the call.

Parker was seething.

He had no idea which hospital she was at for her checkup. Driving aimlessly, he passed by a few clinics before finally rerouting toward the firm.

He planned to track down Cassidy's secretary.

But the second he realized that he, her husband, had to go through a secretary just to find his own wife, his anger flared all over again.

Parker was trash, sure, but he wasn't completely rotten to the core.

Every now and then, a tiny, fleeting spark of a conscience would flicker to life inside him.

It was like a normal person having a momentary lapse in judgment.

Except he was a terrible person having a momentary lapse of goodness.

And it was precisely this tiny sliver of 'goodness' that gave people the false hope that he could actually change.

But he couldn't.

The only person he truly cared about was himself.

His occasional moments of decency didn't stem from realizing he was wrong or genuinely wanting to improve. They happened when a situation spiraled out of his control. He would panic, get scared, and try to force everything back onto his preferred track.

Once the problem was solved, he'd go right back to being trash.

His flashes of goodness weren't signs of redemption. He knew exactly what it meant to be a good man—he just actively chose to be a bastard instead.

The uneasy knot in his stomach was too strong to ignore.

Ultimately, he drove to the firm.

It was a busy workday. Parker stomped past the crowded cubicles, heading straight for Cassidy's office.

Aidan Young was seated at the desk right outside her door.

Just the sight of this secretary made Parker's blood boil.

If she needed an assistant, why did she have to hire a guy?
