Nora didn't immediately rush to the facility.
Instead, she commandeered half of Maloney's desk. With her left hand scrolling frantically through her contacts, she wielded a pen in her right, furiously jotting down notes in a fresh notebook.
Maloney sat next to her, stealing sideways glances at her intense focus.
He offered, "The firm has a professional legal team you can use."
"Lawyers have specialties," she replied without breaking her rhythm. "Your corporate lawyers are best for business operations, contract disputes, intellectual property stuff. I need a top-tier criminal defense attorney..."
Mid-sentence, she dialed a number. The moment it connected, she pressed the phone to her ear, her voice instantly dropping an octave into a sickeningly sweet purr. "Hello, senior? It's me, Nora. I have a tiny favor to ask you..."
Maloney's jaw clenched.
Why was she using that voice?!
He glared at her in absolute disbelief.
He peeked at her notebook again.
She was calling in favors to find a prominent criminal lawyer who also had a strong social media presence to handle the inevitable PR fallout.
This wasn't even a difficult task.
He could have secured someone with a single phone call.
"Mhm, sounds perfect. Thank you so much! I'll definitely treat you to dinner when I have time!"
Hanging up, she dove back into her contacts for the next call.
Maloney held his tongue for as long as he could, which wasn't long. "Why does your voice change when you're on the phone?"
"Huh?"
"Why are you trying to sound cute?"
She glanced at him, genuinely confused. "What are you talking about?"
"Busy finding more 'seniors' to bat your eyes at?"
"I'm finding a lawyer!" She turned and glared at him, the pen spinning furiously. "It is completely normal to sound a little different. He's my upperclassman from university, and I'm asking him for a huge favor. Of course I'm going to sound softer, more polite, and more formal! That's just basic etiquette!"
In her agitation, her finger slipped, and the pen flew out of her hand, smacking right into Maloney's thigh.
"You'd rather beg some guy from college than ask your own husband," he muttered, picking up the pen and slapping it down in front of her. "And now you're throwing weapons at me."
She took a deep breath.
Standing up, she let her expression soften completely, staring at him with huge, pleading eyes. "What do you want me to do?"
"Beg me."
"Please, please, please."
Satisfied, he pulled her into his lap, wrapping an arm around her waist. Right in front of her, he dialed Leo Sterling and relayed her exact requirements for the attorney.
