Leo was incredibly efficient, providing two excellent candidates within twenty minutes.
After confirming the choices, Nora prepped her phone to loop Cassidy and Jasmine into a strategy call.
"Nora," Maloney interjected smoothly.
Thinking he had an important piece of advice, she stopped and looked up.
"You are forbidden from having dinner alone with that 'senior' of yours."
She let out a long, exhausted sigh.
"I am completely speechless. It was just a polite conversational closer!"
"I said no. He'll take it seriously."
"Got it! Now leave me alone so I can work!"
Tossed aside the second his usefulness ran out.
He wanted to argue the point further.
But she had already merged Cassidy and Jasmine into a conference call.
Resigning himself, he kissed her neck and fell silent.
The mess Nathan had triggered was genuinely thorny.
Earlier that morning,
the three women had sat Nathan down and completely shattered his worldview by explaining Valery's dark past.
After the intervention, Nora had gone to the office with Maloney, and Cassidy had taken Jasmine back to her apartment. They had intentionally left Nathan alone in the hospital room to play board games with Valery.
It was partially to make him stick to his word, but mostly to force him to build a bond with her and develop a sense of independent responsibility.
Unfortunately, his father had chosen today of all days to bring Yates to the wellness center.
Mr. Smith scowled. "Yates has some private matters to discuss with Valery. Stop causing trouble and get out of here!"
"No, no, absolutely not." Panic set in, and Nathan shook his head furiously. "Y-you can talk. I'm staying right here. I won't leave. You just say whatever you want, and I'll just sit right here..."
He might have been a coward,
but he had promised Jasmine he would protect Valery with his life.
Furthermore, the idea of Yates wanting to be "alone" with a bedridden woman instantly sent Nathan's mind to a very dark place.
Neither his father nor Yates could comprehend his intense reaction.
After a few wasted attempts at reasoning with him, Mr. Smith lost his patience. Grabbing his son by the collar as Nathan clung desperately to the table, he aggressively hurled him out into the hallway.
Nathan burst into hysterical tears.
He clung to the doorframe, sobbing uncontrollably. "Waaah! I'm not leaving! Valery, Valery, I'm so sorry! It's all my fault!"
