Nora hugged the bouquet with one arm. "Thank you."
Maloney stared fixedly at her.
He seemed to be waiting for her to say more.
He was by no means a subtle or reserved person.
But he always managed to make romantic gestures feel distinctly unromantic.
For instance, on Valentine's Day this year, he had ordered a hundred and ninety-nine Explorer roses arranged in a massive bucket. Instead of handing them directly to Nora, he placed them on the entryway cabinet and waited for her to notice them before explaining it was her gift.
Or the time he won those jewelry sets at auction recently.
He hadn't immediately told Nora they were for her.
Instead, he waited until they were in the throes of passion, draping the jewels over her bare skin before whispering that they all belonged to her.
Today's flowers were the same.
He just shoved them straight into her hands.
Yet his eyes held a desperate hope that she would be thrilled and moved.
Nora leaned in and kissed his cheek. "I love them."
Maloney stayed silent for a few seconds. "That's it?"
"I love you?" Nora offered.
Maloney looked at her flatly.
He took a deep breath and asked quietly, "Do you know why I got you daisies?"
Why was there a pop quiz?
Nora frowned, trying to figure it out.
She couldn't come up with an answer.
The language of daisies signified a love hidden deep within the heart.
They also symbolized innocence, beauty, strength, and bravery.
Back when Maloney was pursuing Nora, he had given her daisies twice.
He had used them to express his secret affection.
If she responded favorably, he could make his next move.
If she didn't, it would just remain a simple blessing.
He had originally thought her lack of response was a rejection.
It turned out Nora simply hadn't understood the message at all.
The more Maloney thought about it, the more frustrated he felt.
He had given her the symbolic flowers.
