Maloney interrupted her sharply, "Who said there's a decade between us?!"
Nora quickly jumped in to clarify. "It's seven years."
She held up seven fingers for emphasis.
"Fine, seven years. A seven-year gap, and you practically ran in completely different circles. Why her?" Seraphina rested her chin in her hand, leaning forward over the table to speak directly into the phone. Right in front of Nora, she deliberately softened her voice. "Maloney, I'm the one who's stood by you for over twenty years."
"Who taught you that time dictates the depth of a connection?" Maloney scoffed. "If I want someone, I know it the second I lay eyes on them. And if I don't, a lifetime won't change my mind."
His statement was brutally clear.
Even Cassidy had to admit that when it came to shutting down another woman, Maloney's execution was flawless.
She was now entirely convinced that every single rumor about their past was absolute garbage.
Just then.
Seraphina pressed on, "You gave me hope."
Maloney's tone turned frigid. "I made it explicitly clear to you a long time ago. My mother's wishes do not dictate mine."
"No, not Lady Whitman. You." Seraphina's voice was utterly convicted. "You told me yourself. You said that once I proved my excellence, you would accept me."
Cassidy shot a look at Seraphina.
Then she dropped her gaze back to the phone on the table.
Another scoff echoed from the speaker. "Are you absolutely certain those words came from my mouth?"
Seraphina doubled down. "Yes!"
"When exactly did I say this?"
"During my senior year of high school."
"Where? Give me a specific time. Who else was there?"
"Winter break. You drove me home for the holidays. You said it in the car."
"The only time I ever gave you a ride was during your freshman year, and that was just because it was on the way. During your senior year, I was building my startup in Westchester. I didn't even come home for the holidays." Maloney's voice was forged from pure ice. "Stop projecting your delusions onto me."
