After signing the paperwork, the three of them bumped into Jasper Zale at the precinct entrance.

"Good to see you, ladies." After greeting them, Jasper turned his attention to Cassidy.

Lowering his voice, he said, "Ms. Sinclair asked me the exact same question today that you asked me a while back."

Cassidy caught on immediately. "The one about Maloney preferring excellent women?"

"Exactly." Jasper looked slightly surprised. "You knew?"

Cassidy nodded. "I saw Seraphina this afternoon."

That meant they had already compared notes.

Jasper nodded in understanding. "We had a big group out for drinks this afternoon. When Ms. Sinclair dropped the question, everyone tried to remember. With enough brains working on it, someone finally recalled that the rumor started when Mr. Jameson lost a game of Truth or Dare at a party and supposedly said it himself."

Parker chimed in from the side. "Maloney playing Truth or Dare? I call bullshit!"

"Right, we all thought it was impossible too," Jasper agreed. "After dissecting it, we figured out the quote actually originated from Sebastian Sinclair."

Hearing this, Cassidy sighed inwardly: *Just as I suspected.*

"But why?" Nora looked utterly confused. "Wasn't the whole point of that rumor to trick Seraphina into going abroad to pad her resume? How does that benefit Sebastian?"

Shouldn't Sebastian have wanted Seraphina to marry Maloney as soon as possible?

That way, he wouldn't have to worry about her fighting for the inheritance, and it would cement his business alliance with Maloney.

There was absolutely no logical reason to trick her into leaving the country.

"Based on what the Sinclair parents said earlier, they knew Mr. Jameson had no feelings for Ms. Sinclair. They were just worried that if she couldn't marry him, she'd completely give up on herself and ruin her life. So, they intentionally let her believe the rumor to get her to study abroad, hoping it would help her grow up."

Jasper clearly didn't buy the explanation himself, his expression twisted in disbelief. "They also claimed it was what Alistair Sinclair expected of her before he passed away."

Nora frowned slightly.

The story just didn't add up.
