"Why don't you go to work first, and we can have our date when you're done."
"You teased a date and now you're bailing?"
"Huh?"
In the end, the date didn't happen.
Mr. Hudson called Maloney three times in a row, urging him to get to the office.
Right before walking out, Maloney patted Nora's head. "Wait for me to get back."
"Mhm," Nora replied, still half-asleep.
The sound of the door clicking shut echoed in the room.
Nora's eyes instantly snapped open.
Not a trace of sleepiness remained in them.
Maloney had been acting weird yesterday.
In the morning, he looked like he was biting his tongue, but by nightfall, he was putting on a massive show of total sincerity.
For anyone else, that kind of behavior might be perfectly normal.
But for Maloney Jameson, it was entirely out of character.
He was always calculated and completely unshakable.
If it was simply a matter of David crossing a line, and Maloney deciding to put an end to him, which was why he didn't want Nora seeing him.
He could have just said so.
There was no need to drag it out from morning until night.
Unlike his vague, dancing-around-the-issue routine, David doing something shady wasn't exactly a forbidden topic.
There was absolutely no reason to wait until the dead of night to make a grand, emotional confession.
Nora had a sneaking suspicion that David was just a convenient tool Maloney was using to divert her attention.
An excuse he had spent the entire day piecing together.
His rare moment of panic that morning had been a cover-up for something else.
This exact feeling brought Nora right back to two years ago.
Two years ago, just before their wedding, the investigation into Nora being drugged at Alistair Sinclair's birthday banquet had officially closed. Bella was exiled from the capital, Vivian locked herself away in her home, and the Cole family completely vanished from the social scene.
At the time, Nora thought it was the perfect conclusion.
She hadn't dared to ask for more.
She understood the value of knowing when to stop.
Society relied on checks and balances.
But then, completely out of the blue, Diana sought Nora out and warned her to enjoy her peaceful life and stop fighting a losing battle.
Nora had been utterly bewildered.
The Nora from two years ago didn't have the courage of the Nora today, who wasn't afraid to throw a tantrum and demand answers.
Back then, all she could do was go to Diana, who found her annoying and told her to stop being ungrateful and just live her comfortable life.
Was she really just being ungrateful?
Nora didn't know.
She didn't even know what a 'comfortable life' was supposed to look like.
All she knew was that her husband was harboring an unrequited love, their sex life was non-existent, her marriage was little more than a gilded cage meant to protect her, and everyone looked at her like she was a burden.
Yet she couldn't blame a single one of them.
Thankfully, those days were behind her.
Now, she and her husband were deeply in love.
But it seemed Maloney was keeping secrets and operating behind her back again.
Only this time, Nora wasn't the same girl she was two years ago.
As she changed her clothes, she debated whether she should secretly track down David for answers or figure out a way to subtly probe Diana.
Both options carried risks.
But comparing the two...
Nora grabbed her keys and drove out.
