Nora had just finished a massive Frappuccino and her stomach was uncomfortably full, so she excused herself to use the restroom.
The moment she walked away, Jasmine leaned in close to Cassidy's ear and whispered, "So based on what you said, is it a good thing or a bad thing?"
"It has nothing to do with good or bad."
"What do you mean?"
"When two people are together, it's all about whether they're compatible."
"Huh?" Jasmine was even more confused.
Cassidy leaned closer, lowering her voice with a meaningful look. "Think about it. If it were you, and the man beside you handled absolutely every problem in your life—your family, your friends, everything under his total control—and all you had to do was make sure he kept loving you to have everything you ever wanted... would you love him more, or would you be terrified of him?"
Jasmine froze.
Cassidy continued, "Nora is different. She didn't love him more, and she wasn't terrified either. When she realized her path had been blocked off, she simply got busy finding a new one."
Suddenly, Jasmine understood what Cassidy had meant last time about 'breaking a man's damn need for control.'
It wasn't a traditional, heavy-handed kind of control.
It was a quiet infiltration into everyday life, a deeply rooted connection that was nearly impossible to sever.
When the love was good, it felt like absolute heaven.
But when the love faded, it became a suffocating restraint.
"Oh..."
Jasmine let out a long sigh of sudden realization.
She asked, "So what should they do?"
"What do you mean, what should they do? They don't need to do anything." Cassidy picked out a burger. "Those two keep each other perfectly in check. It all comes down to what Nora wants."
It was simple, really.
Maloney wanted to completely saturate Nora's life.
And he had succeeded.
But Nora had also proven that even without Maloney, she could still live her life beautifully.
She had shown him exactly what she was capable of.
Now that all their cards were on the table.
It was just a matter of seeing who would compromise first, who would push back first, or if they would both just shrug it off and continue living exactly as they pleased.
Seven o'clock in the evening.
On a bench in the lounge area.
He finally managed to retrieve the phone and dial the number, his voice shaking violently. "M-Mr. Jameson, I... I-I s-saw y-your w-wife..."
Maloney wasn't at the airport; he was in a meeting at the corporate headquarters, buried under a mountain of work. "Are you tired of your job?" he snapped impatiently.
Mr. Hudson's tongue instantly straightened out. "Mr. Jameson, I saw your wife at the airport."
Terrified his boss wouldn't believe him, Mr. Hudson even snapped a stealthy photo of Nora and sent it over.
That news.
Was undoubtedly a massive bombshell.
It was a forty-minute drive from the office to the airport, but Maloney made it in twenty.
He was incredibly fast.
But by the time he arrived, the arrest operation had already concluded.
A few people were scattered around the exit area.
Nora and Cassidy were standing by a planter, deep in conversation.
Maloney strode right up to Nora and sank low to the ground in front of her.
Cassidy watched in stunned silence.
