The more he spoke, the more self-righteous he felt.
"Maddie's health is fragile, and I'm the one who's been guarding her incubator all day. The doctors and nurses are all calling me the perfect father."
"I know you spent the whole day negotiating with the family and haven't even gone to see her yet. I deliberately waited until everyone left so I could come get you and take you to see her."
"And instead, you throw this garbage in my face? You're her mother! Don't you care about her at all? Wow. Is your work really more important to you than your own daughter?!"
Cassidy stared at him, completely unfazed.
Men were truly something else.
He was treating the bare minimum of his paternal duties as if it were some colossal heroic achievement.
And the moment he found a tiny flaw to pick at, he wouldn't shut up about it.
Cassidy offered a faint smile, her tone gentle. "Just listen to me first."
Over the past few months, she had finally mastered the art of managing Parker.
He responded to honey, not vinegar.
The trick wasn't to argue with him. It was to praise him, agree with him, and stroke his ego until she got exactly what she wanted.
"Parker, you are a wonderful father. Knowing you're the one watching over Maddie gives me total peace of mind."
Her voice was soft, laced with an artificially constructed patience. "I'm not asking for a divorce because of you. I'm doing it for you."
Seeing his eyes widen in defensive protest, she quickly added, "Let me finish."
"Lately, haven't you been enjoying life a lot more than when we were actually together?"
"You go wherever you want, come home whenever you want, and drink with whoever you want. No one is nagging you or trying to tie you down. Doesn't that freedom feel amazing?"
"You could have even more of it."
"Parker, I know you haven't actually crossed the line and betrayed me. I believe you're a man with principles."
That was an outright lie.
Making it sound as if she were sacrificing everything purely for his benefit.
The expression on Parker's face shifted from irritation to confusion, and finally to outright shock. He choked on his words for a long moment before a sudden, venomous thought occurred to him. "You're the one who wants freedom!"
"You want to divorce me so you can run off with your toy boys, don't you?"
"Silas King or whatever other billionaire you've got lined up! Now that the baby is born, you just want to dump me so you can bring another man into your bed. Admit it!"
Cassidy didn't bother to deny his accusations.
She merely sighed, offering a masterfully ambiguous response. "Regardless of anything else, Maddie is going to be my only child for the rest of my life. I will leave absolutely everything I have to her."
"I've stated that explicitly in the settlement. And you have to do the same, Parker. No matter how many girlfriends you cycle through, everything you own must go to Maddie."
With that, she picked up the discarded divorce papers and held them out to him once again. "Just read it."
Parker refused to take it. He glared at her coldly. "I'm not getting a divorce."
