"Parker," Cassidy said calmly. "A divorce is what's best for both of us."
"You just want to ditch me for a pretty boy! Don't try to pin this on me! I told my parents there was something going on between you and that guy last time, and they didn't even believe me! They told me to stop causing trouble out of nowhere! You're really something, you know that? You've got them completely brainwashed."
"You know perfectly well whether I've done anything wrong or not. We've been together a long time; you should know me better than that. The real question is, do you honestly want to be chained to me for the rest of your life?"
Cassidy's eyes were piercingly clear, her gaze making his skin crawl.
He opened his mouth to retort but couldn't find the words. After a long, suffocating silence, he pressed his lips together, spun on his heel, and stormed out.
This time, Cassidy didn't call him back.
She had planted the seed, and that was enough for now.
Parker was always slow on the uptake. He might be rejecting the idea out of pride right now, but give him a little time to process it, and he would realize just how flawless her proposal truly was.
An ex-wife slaving away to make the Quincy corporation richer, a beautiful and adorable daughter, a life entirely free from the suffocating chains of marriage, and the absolute freedom to cycle through girlfriends without ever being lectured by his parents again.
It was all upside.
The marriage certificate existed solely to protect Cassidy's interests.
To Parker, it was nothing but a moral ball and chain.
In truth, Cassidy hadn't wanted a divorce in the beginning either.
As long as she was Mrs. Quincy, she had access to all of the family's vast resources. Parker was the sole male heir, which meant the entire empire would eventually fall into her daughter's hands.
It was only a matter of time.
But eventually, Cassidy's mindset had shifted.
It wasn't about love, it wasn't out of spite, and it certainly wasn't for another man.
It was simply because she had grown powerful enough on her own.
Even without the Quincy family backing her, she could conquer the business world single-handedly.
That was why she had the confidence to demand a divorce.
It didn't matter in the slightest if Parker agreed or not. Bridget had already agreed, and the family had given their tacit approval. Who cared what Parker thought?
In Cassidy's ears, Parker's jealous accusations and insults sounded like nothing more than a toddler throwing a tantrum. A little patronizing coaxing was all it took.
From now on, she was going to pour every ounce of her soul into her empire.
As for love...
To borrow a phrase Nora had been using lately: Life is always full of regrets.
Cassidy's misery had begun the moment she made the fatal mistake of falling in love with her arranged husband, and it would end the moment she severed those ties and dedicated herself solely to her career.
She was fairly certain she would never allow herself to fall for anyone ever again.
Speaking of Nora, she recalled that she had visited the hospital earlier today, but they hadn't managed to cross paths.
Cassidy had sent her a text.
Nora hadn't replied.
It wasn't even midnight yet. Normally, Nora would be mindlessly scrolling through her phone right now, trying to fall asleep.
