Nora and Cassidy's phone call dragged on for an hour and forty minutes with no end in sight.
Before the call, Maloney and Nora had been discussing grabbing some seasonal dishes at a private, upscale restaurant near the hotel.
But from five-thirty until ten past seven, they hadn't even stepped out of their suite.
Half an hour into the conversation, Maloney strolled past Nora.
Nora, who was lying sideways on the sofa, simply lifted her leg and nudged him in the thigh, gesturing for him to back off.
Knowing she was deep in a serious conversation, Maloney didn't push it. He headed into the adjoining study to handle some work.
Since they were planning an extended stay in Southampton, they had upgraded from an executive suite to the Presidential Suite on the top floor.
When Nora was on her own, she preferred to keep a low profile.
She bought business class tickets and booked standard five-star suites. She didn't rely on Maloney's wealth, nor did she hide the fact that she was financially secure on her own.
But when Maloney was around, she happily adapted to his extravagant standards.
She was effortlessly adaptable.
The Presidential Suite was massive.
They could each occupy a separate room without ever disturbing one another.
After Maloney replied to two urgent emails and hosted a brief internal corporate meeting, Nora was still on the phone.
He wandered back into the living room, hovering near her.
He mouthed the words, "Are you hungry?"
Nora glanced up at him and kicked her leg out again.
This time, Maloney's reflexes were faster. He caught her by the ankle.
"Hey!" Nora let out a startled gasp.
On the other end of the line, Cassidy paused. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," Nora quickly replied. "Cass, give me ten seconds."
Covering the microphone with her palm, she leaned forward and whispered to Maloney, "Just wait a little longer."
Fun fact: voice calls had a mute button.
Her palm didn't block out all the noise. Muffled snippets of their conversation filtered through the gaps of her fingers and straight into Cassidy's ear.
"How long?"
"Just a little bit."
"How long is a little bit?"
Who would have remembered that just a few months ago, they were practically at war?
You hide things from me, I investigate you; you control me, I try to escape you.
Their relationship had been on the verge of shattering completely.
And then, Nora suddenly chose to let the past go.
When she said she was dropping it, she meant it. When she promised not to pry, she genuinely never asked another question.
In fact, Nora had let it go while Cassidy was still holding onto it.
Cassidy occasionally gave Nora updates on the legal battle on her own accord.
For example, after the trial began, Cassidy discovered that Diana Dodge was the true mastermind behind the scenes.
Maloney and Diana were actually working together.
Diana had approached Seraphina Sinclair to use her as a wedge to sever the ties between the Sinclair Group and The Cole Family.
They exchanged resources and used anyone who held value.
As for the worthless pawns, they were just bait, sacrificed without a second thought.
Cassidy couldn't stand the fact that for Nora's entire life, Diana had used her. She would offer Nora the tiniest scrap of kindness while simultaneously berating her for being useless, all while keeping her completely in the dark.
