Parker stared at her in disbelief. "I just want to stay in one of your guest rooms so it's easier to see Maddie. I won't even bother you. Is it really that hard to agree to such a simple request?"

Cassidy firmly refused.

She had a gut feeling that letting him move in would be easy, but getting him to leave would be a nightmare. She couldn't open that door.

The two broke into a heated argument.

The housekeeper standing beside Cassidy had been hired by Mrs. Quincy. Seeing the situation spiral out of control, she quickly notified Bridget.

Bridget pulled Parker aside and handed him The Divorce Settlement, demanding he sign it.

Without a word, Parker tore the document to shreds and stormed back into Cassidy's villa, practically radiating fury.

"You're ruthless, Cassidy!"

"Ask yourself, have I done anything to betray you since you gave birth?!"

"I ran to the hospital every single day, video-calling you just so you could see Maddie. I asked the doctor about her condition every morning and relayed it to you word for word."

"Does none of that mean anything to you?!"

"Maddie just got discharged, and all I wanted was to spend a little more time with her. But your first instinct is to demand a divorce and kick me out on the street! What do you take me for?!"

"Do you even care about Maddie half as much as I do?!"

"I already said we could wipe the slate clean! I've done everything I possibly could, and if you still feel like I owe you, I can spend the rest of my life making it up to you!"

"Isn't this all about the shares? Grandpa won't let me hand them over, but I don't care! I'll give them all to you right now!"

"Do you look down on me that much? You won't even give me a chance. You just had my mother try to force me to sign the papers!"

"Let me tell you something, Cassidy. Don't push me to the edge!"

"Maddie is my daughter. Even if we divorce, she's coming with me!"

Parker stood at the edge of Cassidy's bed, shouting for a long time.

Cassidy didn't say a single word in return.

Eventually, the bodyguards dragged Parker away.

The bedroom fell dead silent, but the storm inside Cassidy's chest raged on.

Parker's furious insults echoed in her mind.

She replayed them over and over.

The phone vibrated suddenly, sending a jolt through her fingertips. Cassidy snapped out of her daze and instinctively accepted the call.

"Cass?"

Hearing her best friend's familiar voice, Cassidy let out a long, trembling breath.

The dull ache pressing against her chest finally eased a fraction.

Nora asked tentatively, "Is Maddie doing okay?"

"She's great. Everything is perfectly normal. She's gained some weight and her complexion is beautiful."

The rigid tension in Cassidy's shoulders slowly melted away. She leaned back against the headboard, offering a faint smile. "When are you coming back?"

Nora picked up on the chaotic rhythm of Cassidy's breathing. She pressed stubbornly, "Did something happen?"

Cassidy fell silent for a moment before speaking softly. "Parker came to see me this afternoon..."

She spoke at a painfully slow pace.

When she got to the part where Parker had screamed at her, she paused after almost every sentence.

Fortunately, Nora was an excellent listener.
