Nora said quickly, "I'll go home."
She had planned to call a cab.
But Cassidy insisted on dropping her off at Luna Bay.
The car pulled up to the estate.
The moment Nora stepped out, the front door swung open from the inside.
Maloney Jameson walked out.
The second their eyes met, a flash of awkward guilt crossed Nora's face.
"Ma-Maloney," she stammered softly. "You're still up."
Maloney glanced at her and gave a low, "Yeah. Head inside."
Trailing behind him, Nora sneakily turned and gave Cassidy a tiny wave.
A silent goodbye.
Cassidy leaned against her steering wheel, waving back, deep in thought.
Beside her, Felix winced slightly as he watched them walk away. "Man," he muttered in awe. "Are they married? Why does it look like a principal catching a student sneaking out past curfew?"
Cassidy had no words.
The front door clicked shut.
As Nora bent down to take off her shoes, she wished she could bury her head directly into them.
An intense gaze burned into the top of her head like a spotlight.
She didn't dare look up.
Nora stalled, untying her laces at an agonizingly slow pace.
She had driven earlier and was wearing sneakers. First she undid the bow, then loosened the knot, then pulled the rest of the string slack—she did everything short of unlacing the entire shoe.
The ordeal lasted a solid five minutes.
Maloney didn't say a word.
