Chapter 187: Between Heaven and Earth

EIRLYS’ POV

Claim

Panic surged through me so fast it stole my breath He might be a dragon, capable of burning

through armies, but against a single celestial guardian, let alone six, he wouldn’t stand a chance.

“Kierygan.” I reached for him, but my voice came out thin, swallowed by the low hum of power

gathering in the air.

Then a calm, steady voice broke through the tension. “There is no need to draw weapons,” Lorien

said, gliding from behind the dais, her white robes catching the faint shimmer of divine light as she

came closer.

Kierygan’s blade stayed raised, the muscle in his jaw twitching as his gaze fixed on the celestials. ” Then don’t stand in my way,” he said, voice rough with warning. “And leave my mate alone.”

Light gathered around the guardians, faint but dangerous, and dread clawed higher in my chest

with every heartbeat. They could unmake him with a single thought-erase him as easily as breath

on glass.

But Kierygan… Kierygan looked like he would never yield.

Lorien raised her hand, and the air went still. A soft, golden shimmer pulsed outward.

Kierygan’s sword wavered, then lowered against his will-the metal trembling as though caught in

a current stronger than his own strength. Fury flared in his eyes, his jaw tightening as scales

shimmered faintly along his skin. But Lorien’s power was like gravity itself-inescapable,

unyielding.

“No one will stop you from taking her home,” Lorien said, her voice calm, almost tender. It carried

through the vast chamber like a lullaby meant to soothe storms.

With a harsh exhale, Kierygan released his weapon. It hit the marble with a resounding clang. I

rushed to him, and he caught me against his chest, his body tense as steel. His glare swept over

the gathered celestials.

“Then what the hell do you mean you decided for her?” he hissed.

Lorien turned to the others, her hair gleaming like spun light in the hush of the chamber. Seraphael

gave a single, measured nod, as though granting her unspoken permission.

When she faced us again, her gaze found mine. “Given your unique position,” she began, her voice steady and melodic, carrying that quiet authority only she possessed. “Like your name, Eirlys-a flower that blooms between winter and spring-you, too, belong to both Heaven and Earth.”

My breath caught.

Lorien’s gaze softened before she spoke again. “After much deliberation,” she said, “we have come to believe you are not meant to belong to one realm alone. You are the bridge… between the light

above and the life below.”

My throat went dry, but I forced the words out. “A bridge? What do you mean?”

“Closing the Veil between realms was… a misstep,” Aecron said. “It left us blind to the corruption festering on Earth, unchecked.”

His gaze swept across the other guardians before returning to me. “We cannot allow that to happen again,” he continued. “You, Eirlys, are uniquely suited to serve as a bridge. You may remain on Earth, live among its people… but if a threat like that ever rises once more, you are to inform us.”

A storm churned inside me-relief, worry, and something else I couldn’t quite name. Honor, perhaps. The Celestial Guardians were asking for my help.

I looked at Kierygan. His eyes met mine, steady and sure, his fingers tightening around my hand in a silent vow of faith. His nod told me everything. It was my choice now.

I turned back to the celestials, my voice trembling but firm. “I… I accept.”

A hush fell over the chamber, but I caught the faintest curve of Seraphael’s mouth-a ghost of a smile that vanished as swiftly as it appeared.

Then he turned to my father, his expression hardening. “As for you, Orion…” His voice rang through

the chamber like the toll of a distant bell. “From this day forth, you are no longer a Guardian of the

Veil.”

I snapped my gaze to my father, searching his face for outrage, disbelief-anything. But there was

none. Only calm. Only… acceptance.

Then Lorien stepped forward, her movements graceful and solemn. She stopped just behind

Seraphael, her voice soft yet resonant.

“You, instead, shall become the Guardian of Lost Souls,” she said. “You will guide them to the

Haven of Renewal-the ones whose light was stolen by the being who called himself the Light

Reaper. You will gather the scattered stardust and return it to those souls, until they rekindle… and

are ready for their rebirth.”

For a long heartbeat, silence reigned. Then my father bowed his head slightly. “I accept my

penance,” he said, his voice steady, unwavering. “Wholeheartedly.”

Seraphael’s gaze swept slowly across the assembly, his white-gold eyes reflecting the soft

radiance of the realm itself. When he finally spoke, his voice carried that same measured calm-

only now, it was lighter.

“Then it is done,” he said.

His eyes moved from my father to me, then to my companions behind us. “May all of you take a lesson from this,” he continued, pausing as his gaze lingered on Kierygan and me. “Just as we have learned from you-through your love, and your sacrifice.”

For a breath, silence held the chamber still. Then he lifted his hand. “This assembly is dismissed.”

The Celestials bowed their heads in acknowledgment, and I let out a long, unsteady breath of relief. Beside me, I felt Kierygan and the others begin to relax, the tension slowly ebbing from the air. It was as if all of Heavenreach itself exhaled after holding its breath.

Kierygan’s arm slipped around me, his warmth pressing close as his voice rumbled low beside my ear. “We’re finally going home,” he said.

Home. The word sank into me like sunlight through thawing frost. “Yes… please,” I whispered as I

breathed him in-his scent, his heat, his impossible steadiness.

But I pulled back, heart tugging. “I want to say goodbye to my father.”

He studied me for a long moment, jaw tight, eyes unreadable, before giving a single, slow nod. “Go on, then,” he murmured.

I ran toward my father, my feet light and heavy at the same time, until I stood before him. He looked calm-too calm, given what had just been decreed. I couldn’t tell if it was true acceptance, or if he was simply masking the emotions beneath.

His hands reached for mine as I approached. “I’m sorry,” I said softly. “About your punishment… it must be hard, being exiled from what you’ve known for eternity.”

For a heartbeat, his expression remained unreadable. Then, slowly, a quiet, almost wistful smile

curved his lips.

“My dear daughter,” he said gently, “I do not see this as a punishment at all.”

I blinked, confusion tightening in my chest. “How… can you say that?”

He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he led me a few steps away from the others, along a path dappled in shifting light. Even after receiving a heavy verdict, his eyes burned with a quiet

brilliance, as if some inner light refused to dim.

Finally, his voice broke the hush-soft, steady, carrying a strange serenity. “I’m going somewhere between Heaven and Earth… where spirits go.”

He stopped and turned to face me. “Do you know who else would be there?”

My eyes widened. “…My mother?”

He only smiled knowingly. That smile was enough confirmation. The kind that made my throat tighten, and my chest ache all at once.

I swallowed, my voice barely above a whisper. “Will… ever see you again?”

“You are the bridge now,” he said. “The veil is open for you, though it would be wise not to abuse

the privilege.”

I drew in a shaky breath, trying to steady the storm of emotions swirling inside me. “Right,” I said, forcing a small laugh. “Not exactly looking forward to another meeting with Seraphael, or the

others, anytime soon.”

A low, rich chuckle escaped him, and it seemed to linger in the air. My chest warmed despite the

ache in my heart. “Wise, my daughter. Very wise.”

He resumed walking, his hand finding mine once more. “Your dragon is waiting,” he said. “I should

return you.”

When we reached Kierygan, I sensed a subtle shift. My mate’s eyes met my father’s, and for the

first time, there was no flicker of doubt-only recognition and respect.

My father’s gaze softened as he spoke. “I hear you’ve saved my daughter more than once.”

Kierygan’s eyes locked on me fiercely, then turned back to him. “She was the one who saved me.”

A quiet understanding passed between them then, unspoken yet profound, a reverent acknowledgment that made my chest ache with warmth and pride.

Then my father turned back to me, his eyes glinting with a mixture of hope and something close to joy. “When I am reunited with Astraea,” he said softly, “I’ll let you know.”

I tilted my head, curiosity tugging at me. “How?”

A faint, knowing smile curved his lips, secretive and luminous. “Look to the sky,” he whispered.
