She was sitting with Paul and Carol in Nick’s office along with his unit. They’d been called in for a meeting the very next day to discuss things that Nick had ready to set into motion. He looked from her to Carol and Paul, “Paul, you’re already aware I have found a pack that needs a Gamma for its unit,”
“Hmm, I am,” Paul nodded. “I’ve not discussed it with Mischa as yet though.”
“It’s up to you, not Mischa, only you can make this choice. Alpha Declan is a good man and is also willing to accept Mischa into his pack. All your relatives, I’ve kept him apprised of the situation called him last night,” Nick stated.
“Who’s Alpha Declan?” Mischa asked curiously. “And where is his Gamma?”
“He is the Alpha I told you about, and the pack I’ve arranged for you to move to, and he has no gamma because Rhona found herself a Mate who is the Beta of another pack, and in accepting him she had to move to his pack, because he was part of the Leadership. It was a difficult decision because they were both part of the leadership and both packs either had a Beta or Gamma in their unit.
“In the end, she moved, but she’d been brought into Declan’s pack by the Wolfen Council when it was opened. She doesn’t actually have any family ties to it, came from elsewhere and didn’t have an heir to leave behind and step up into the role.”
“How old is the pack?” Mischa asked curiously.
“It’s considered new only been there for one full generation, he is the first Alpha to it. He is a pure–blood like I am, good and decent, approved by the wolfen Council themselves when he wanted to start his own.”
“And that came about how?” Mischa asked.
“His pack was taken over when he was a child, and he was sent away to survive the war by his parents, sent right to the Wolfen Council with all his parents‘ money. They rehoused him, he’s well–educated, wealthy, and when he was old enough, he found a piece of suitable land. He approached the Wolfen Council to have it become a pack.
“He then started poaching his parent’s wolves once more. He didn’t go in and aggressively take over his home to reclaim it once more. Didn’t want to be like the one that destroyed his home pack. So he approached the wolves over the years one by one of in groups if they worked in the city, and told them he was now an Alpha of his own pack.
“That if they wanted to move to it, they could. Over time, the majority of them have moved there,” Nick told her. “It’s over in lowa, but also right on the border of South Dakota off the Stone State Park. The University of South Dakota, School of Law, which I attended, and was my first choice for you. However, we’ve hit a bit of a snag. Not only does the university require that first and second year students live on campus. They only accept first years in the August intake.”
She nodded. “I don’t mind living on campus for a few years, and we live very long lives. I’ll start when I start,” she shrugged.
“I thought you might say that. I knew you weren’t looking to start until next year, so only a delay really of six months or so, I didn’t particularly concern myself with that.”

“It’s fine and that will give me real time to prepare for it,” Mischa nodded. “I can sit and study, read this year’s first year law books and get a bit of a head start.” She smiled, and it didn’t bother her at all she could do with a well–earned rest.
“The only problem Tforesee is Anthony is going to come looking for you at some point, likely when you go into heat in two and bit weeks, and then again in May next year before classes start.”
“Hmm, I’ll just tell him I’m in the city for a meeting, and it couldn’t be helped.” She shrugged.
“If it’s the middle of the night?” Nick asked right back. “That won’t work.”
“Hmm… the meeting ran late. I opted to stay in a hotel.” She answered, she had thought about it quite a bit already; how to explain not being around when her heat happened. “It’s one bout twice a year. He could be in the city for it when it hits and, therefore, he won’t make it back. I can get round that,” and she could.
“Alright, I’ll leave that one up to you. Your pack is due to hold a mating ball this corning full moon. Though I don’t recall Lucinda getting an invitation, but I know when you hold them.” he changed the topic.
“Hmm, Christy is now in charge of organizing them for the pack, and with you not liking her… I guess she’s dropped you off the list… Though that could work in my favor… You are to be invited twice a year, it’s in the pack alliance we have… If you don’t get an invitation,
“It breaches the alliance deal.” She smiled. “You should have Lucinda put a call in about it and see just what Christy says on the matter. Remind her Anthony’s got an alliance deal to uphold and there are penalties for breaching the deal.”
“Be sure to record the conversation so you can play it for Anthony,” Paul stated. If not, she’ll convince him it was just a mistake, play the ‘I’ve only been the Luna Card‘ for a few months.”
“Or I’m pregnant and it just slipped my mind. Do the whole baby brain thing,” Mischa nodded. “Not that wolves have that, but she’ll play some card to get around inviting you to the pack, just because she doesn’t like you, and knows you don’t like her, only deal with me. But there is, I believe, no reason for her to be rude to Lucinda.”
“Let’s do that now,” Nick stated, and she watched his eyes glaze over and then Lucinda walked in from her office next door and smiled at everyone. “We’ll all stay quiet while you put that call in,” Nick told her, obviously he’d explained what was going on through that mind–link.
She watched as Nick got up from his own chair and Lucinda sat right in it and smiled. Not many Alphas would do that, she thought absently. Anthony certainly didn’t. She’d been allowed to sit on his lap in that chair, but she didn’t recall he’d ever just gotten up for her to sit in it to make a phone call.
“I don’t have Christy’s direct number, only yours, Mischa, so I’ll call the Luna’s Office directly,” Lucinda stated and placed the call, hit the loudspeaker as Nick placed his phone on the desk and hit record.
It rang half a dozen times before it was picked up, “Luna Christy speaking.” Christy’s voice came down the line.
“Luna Christy, it’s Luna Lucinda, how are you?” she asked with a smile in her voice.
“Luna Lucinda? Whose Mate are you, and from what pack?” Christy asked right back.
Lucinda looked right at Mischa and shook her head. “That is actually quite rude of you. To not know who I

am, considering we’re allied packs Christy, perhaps I should speak with Luna Mischa, at least she’ll know who I am.”
“She’s currently not in the pack, I’ve just taken over the role.”
“Christy, you’ve personally sent me mating ball invitations before, as for you’ve just taken over the role. You have been Anthony’s Mate for 3 years now, give or take a few months, and were in the role for two years. Just took a year off to have lessons on how to do the proper job, I believe.”
“Lucinda, you say, honestly it does ring a bell… but I can’t place you, it must have been awhile since we’ve spoken.”
“I’m Alpha Nicholas‘ Mate from the Rising Blue Lotus,” Lucinda told her who she was dealing with.
“Oh, what can I do for you?” Christy stated blandly, as if she didn’t care to who she was speaking with.
“I’ve not received the November Mating Ball invite. Are you not holding one?” Lucinda asked directly.
“We are, I didn’t put your pack on the list is all. I’m going to be running things differently to how the old Luna used to do so.”
“Old Luna? Has Anthony and Mischa’s bond ended? That could cause ramifications for our alliance; probably see us end it. I’ll have to inform Nicholas. It was Mischa that brought us in for your pack.”
“Wait… they are not rejected.” Christy kind of muttered, “I’m the one now that is sitting in the Luna’s office is all. Mischa opted to be the pack’s accountant only. Something about it was too much work for her to do both jobs.”
“Hmm, she did always work so very hard for the pack, bringing in new business and alliance deals too, as well as managing the pack funds to keep it in the black. Heed a little advice Christy, calling Mischa the old Luna, will see nearly every one of your allies think she and Anthony are rejected. That could have pack alliance–related consequences. I also think it is very disrespectful of you to speak of your Mate’s other Luna in such a manner.”
“What did you call for, I don’t need a lecture from you?” Christy rapped out.
“The Mating ball for November’s full moon?” Lucinda stated,
“Oh that, as I said, I’ll be running things differently from now on. You’re not invited because I’ve opted to invite all non–affiliated packs to bring in new blood. Your pack attends every mating ball we hold. So, not coming won’t hurt.”
“Oh, I see, all non–affiliated packs… that’s a bit risky, don’t you think? Does Anthony know what you’ve done? Or is he blindly trusting you with the pack’s safety? Four or five unknown packs bringing 50 wolves, likely to be all warrior–blooded I’m guessing, into your pack. Do you realize that could have ramifications…”
“What are you talking about? I’m expanding and bringing in new blood. Mischa isn’t the only one to be able to grow the pack, I can as well,” Christy stated, and Mischa wondered if in Christy’s brain she was still trying to compete with her to prove she was better than Mischa.
“Hrnm, but 200 or 250 unknown warriors inside your pack. That could be very bad. If they opt to join forces and attack you from within, not one allied pack attending the mating ball means no allied assistance either. How many warriors does your pack have? And four or five unallied Alphas and their units as well.

“Do you think Anthony, Kendrick and Dereck can defend against that: 3 to 16 or 3 to 20?” she sighed. “That Ts not a risk I would take, and our pack is nearly 3000 and everyone here trains, even the omegas can hold their ground. We’re nearly three times as large as you are.”
There was silence on the other end of the line, and she knew Lucinda had Christy’s brain ticking, that girl didn’t want to lose everything she’d finally gotten, and she’d thought she’d found a way to bring in more wolves to make up for the ones that had left the pack over her stupidly spoken words only now to realize she’d not thought it through.
“Non–affiliated but not unknown,” Christy stated finally.
“Hmm, so known and been there before?” Lucinda commented and Mischa had to hold in the laugh.
“Yes, so there is no risk,” Christy stated.
“Hmm, but you just told me we didn’t need to come, because we’d been there before, so by that alone no known or affiliated packs are attending this ball… Or are you perhaps rejecting Nick and my pack Christy? Is that what you’re telling me in a round about way. You no longer need the Rising Blue Lotus as an allied pack?” Lucinda asked.
