She saw Brent take a calming breath and then open his eyes and hit the answer button. He, however, didn’t even get the chance to greet Anthony or ask what he wanted. The moment the line connected, Anthony rapped out, “I can’t reach Mischa, is she with you? You were supposed to be keeping an eye on her.”

Brent sighed a little, “She was fine the last time I saw her, she’ll likely call you back later.”

There was silence for a long moment, then Anthony stated, “Mind–link to her now.”

“I’m out having dinner, boss, that wouldn’t be appropriate for me to do right now, in this restaurant,” Brent responded quite simply but sounded a little apologetic at the same time. “I did see her call you earlier, as we checked into the hotel today. I, however, didn’t listen in to her conversation with you. That would be inappropriate of me, hmm that was like two and a half hours ago. Why are you so worried?” Brent asked right back.

She looked at her watch, and he wasn’t wrong. It was about two and a half hours ago, so not lying to his Alpha, because he’d looked at her before taking that call, and she was fine, and he’d not looked at her since answering it. Oh, the man knew how to play the game. She was getting a show of her own right now. That was fun for her to watch.

“I didn’t take a call from Mischa,” Anthony stated, and she could hear the frown in his voice

now.

“Well, she did call you, I was right there. Oh… hang on… I do recall it was Christy that answered your phone. Recall Mischa stating to Christy to put you on the phone… Perhaps Mischa left a message with her,” Brent stated, leaving out the obvious that Christy hadn’t passed it along to him.

“Right.” Anthony bit out and the line clicked closed.

Mischa chuckled now, as Brent shook his head and finally looked at her once more. She couldn’t hold it in any longer, “Very well done. You know how to play the game. Not even one single lie did you speak. Worded yourself perfectly, Brent.”

“Hmm, at my age one learns not to get in trouble with the Boss. I also heard that conversation between you and Christy. Sorry, I did listened in, was curious myself. You did tell her she’d have to bare the consequences. Well, now here they are.

“She’s about to get caught out in actively stopping you from speaking to Anthony, by Anthony himself. Or at the least, not passing on a message, of what is actually considered to be important. Because it’s a full change of return home plans.”

“There was no message to be left, so…” Mischa shrugged. “She can’t play that card. I’ll tell

him I didn’t leave one and if Christy tries to state I did, I’ll ask him to Alpha Order me if I did or not. She’ll lose that very quickly.”

“He won’t order you.” Brent shook his head.

“No, but Allen or Ray will, at my request, to clear my name… And that will be the point, my having to clear my name from Christy’s accusation that I lied.”

Brent nodded. “I see where you’re going with that.”

“It’s a pity though, that he called… I was kind of hoping he wouldn’t, and I’d just not come home and only then would he realize I wasn’t there and ask what was going on,” she murmured.

“Are you out to cause trouble? Or just trying to see if he notices you’re not back in the pack?” Brent asked as they continued on with their dinner.

“Hmm,” she thought about that as she ate, “Maybe a little bit of both. But I did try and call him, to tell him the change of plan. So you wouldn’t get into trouble when you return home without me.”

Brent nodded. “That you did, and I’m to tell him what exactly when I get home?”

“The truth as you know it. I’m visiting a pack Dana advised me of, that had developments for my symptoms, with another researcher that Dana thinks would be of benefit to me. It’s all the truth, and I am hoping this Madison person will be able to resolve my problem,” she answered him, and she really was hoping there was a way to see her heat not happen or be minimized down to barely anything at all.

Brent nodded. “And you’ll be returning home when exactly?” he asked.

“When I see fit to. It might take a few days. I honestly don’t know.” And she didn’t.

Her phone rang 45 minutes later as she was walking into her hotel room after dinner, and Anthony’s name flashed up on the screen once more. She debated ignoring it for a second time tonight, because she could play the pissed–off Luna card right now, simply because of that conversation she’d had with Christy, where she denied Mischa the right to speak to her

own Mate.

She could see that bitch getting into more trouble by telling him Christy refused to hand the phone to him, as she’d told her to, in plain simple English anyone one could understand. Ignoring it would be fun for her, but she was curious as to what Christy’s explanation was of why she’d not told him Mischa called.

So, she answered the call. “Did you punish her?” she asked in a flat annoyed tone, without greeting him or letting him say a single word to her. Just like he’d done to Brent.

There was what she thought was stunned silence from his end. He’d likely been going to rap out angry words at her, but she’d gotten there first. Let’s see if he could hold to his words of not reacting to her anger, that he understood it was her trying to push him away, and he’d ignore it.

She also knew that he would understand that she knew Christy hadn’t told him or passed on any message if there had been one. She spoke again before he did. “What pathetic excuse did she give you this time?”

“She forgot to tell me.” Anthony answered her.

“Oh! And wolves‘ memories are so very poor, that in the time it took you to finish your shower, which she told me you were doing, she forgot she answered your phone and spoke to me… Ridiculous is what that is, Anthony.” She stated in a hard, flat tone that implied her annoyance. She didn’t believe a single word of that and her tone implied that as well.

“I’m guessing she put her mouth to work on your d**k, the instant you were out of that shower, to keep it busy, and have a reason not to tell you I’d called. Then what? You fucked her for what… hmm, two and a half hours or their abouts, and she had an excuse to say she forgot to tell you… because you distracted her. When, in fact, I dare to say, and accuse her of, starting that sex, I’m certain you had,” Mischa rapped out for him to hear exactly what she believed happened, and laid out the timeline of her call to his call even. “Go back to being with your precious Christy, who can do no wrong.” She snapped and hit the end call button before he could get a word out.

She could keep the rest of what she wanted to say or ask him about that very call, for when she got back to the pack, because what if she had been kidnapped and that phone call that Christy had “conveniently forgotten” to relay to him, could have seen her wind up dead.

He’d clearly not punished Christy, likely she’d told him it was just a quick call to relay she was safe. So it wasn’t of importance, and therefore Christy wouldn’t be seen as doing anything against Mischa.

She now wondered if Christy hadn’t deleted the call log, and he’d checked his phone after sex, and seen she’d called him earlier, which had seen him return her call, only she’d not picked up. Who the hell knew? She couldn’t be bothered to tell him about her change of plans

anymore.

This was her life to live. He’d chosen who he wanted even now knowing Christy had taken that call and declined to tell him about it, he’d not punished that she–wolf. Had believed she’d forgotten when it was so obvious, she’d simply denied him the right to speak with his other

Mate; who was currently not happy with him, and had reached out to him for the very first time of her own accord in weeks.

That one call could have been an olive branch for him from her, and Christy had denied him that, yet she still went unpunished by him. She wondered how he was feeling about her very graphic and curt words about what she believed was going on. If she’d hit the nail on the head even, and what he’d do about it if she had.

He’d said he’d not get angry with her anymore. Well, let’s just see about that in full.

She mind–linked to Brent ‘I picked up his call, he didn’t punish Christy at all, and just a heads–up for yourself, seeing as he didn’t punish her, I didn’t tell him about my change of plans. Which I previously was going to, and was why I called in the first place. So, when he asks you where I am, tell him to call and ask me himself, and that I told you to tell him those very words. Put it all back on me, Brent.‘

She heard him sigh heavily ‘sure.’ And Mischa dropped the link.

She’d warned them both the gloves were off, and this would show them they actually were. She flicked a message to her unit and Paul created a group chat for them, ‘I’m going off grid for a few days. I’ll be coming back to execute my plans.‘ Then she switched her phone to ‘do

not disturb‘.

She would have peace and quiet, until she returned to the pack. She no longer cared about what Anthony felt about anything with regard to herself. She sat and documented everything from dinner and after it, showered and climbed into bed.

She saw Brent off and sat in the Wolf Airline terminal to wait for her flight to Phoenix. When landing in Phoenix, she found two wolves standing there with her name on a card, as she disembarked. She looked right at them, a pack Gamma and a she–wolf. Laud picked up that they were not only of the same pack, but were Mates as well.

“I’m Mischa.” She stated simply.

“Luna Mischa, it’s good to meet you. I’m Maddy and this is my Mate Palmer. We’re from the Forest of Light. I wanted to pick you up myself,” she stepped over and held her hand out to

Mischa.

Mischa shook it and smiled at her. “Maddy, as is the Madison I’m here to see?”

“Yes, I thought it would be best if you had an escort, be safe on your travels. Dana was the one to relay your not–so–nice situation to me and ask for assistance.”

“Thank you for coming down to get me. I was just going to hire a car and drive up myself,”

she stated.

“You’re traveling alone.” Palmer frowned at her.

“Yes, I am on my own mission for myself, and no one else needs to know about it at this point in time.” She stated, “My own Gamma is mostly aware of what I’m doing, as is my unit, so do not concern yourself with it. I will do as I please with my life, regardless of being mated to an Alpha. He no longer has any say in what I do with myself.”
