The Ex-Con Who Conquered the World novel Chapter 100

Nanette froze, her expression shifting as understanding dawned. "You're asking me to be your informant?"

"In a sense, yes—but it's also meant as a gesture of goodwill. I wouldn't ask you to do anything illegal. Just keep me updated on Margery's schedule, her state of mind, her health... that sort of thing."

Fidel paused briefly before continuing, "Of course, I won't let you do this for free. I'll pay you 10 thousand dollars each month."

Ten thousand dollars!

For Nanette, the offer was undeniably generous. All she had to do was pass along basic details about Margery—nothing complicated, nothing obviously wrong.

Her salary barely topped 10 thousand dollars a month as it was.

Living in the city as a young woman came with constant pressure: rent, utilities, cosmetics, the occasional new outfit or pair of shoes. By the end of each month, her earnings were nearly gone.

If she accepted Fidel's proposal, that Louis Vuitton bag she'd been eyeing for so long would finally be within reach.

Seeing her hesitation, Fidel sensed that she was tempted.

To sway her further, he added smoothly, "To show my sincerity, I'll transfer the first payment right now—consider it an advance for this month."

Nanette's face betrayed an inner struggle.

On the surface, Fidel's request seemed harmless enough—just sharing routine updates.

But becoming an informant meant betrayal, however slight.

Deep down, she knew how desire worked: once she started, it was hard to stop.

If she agreed now, the money would sweeten the deal, and later, when Fidel raised the stakes, she might find herself crossing lines she never intended to cross. She could end up like a puppet, pulled into actions that hurt Margery—actions she'd feel compelled to carry out.

After a moment's reflection, Nanette offered a careful smile. "Mr. Payne, this is... rather sudden. I need a little time to think it over."

She kept her tone polite, careful not to offend.

Fidel's family had a little money and influence; offending him could mean trouble for someone like her—an ordinary employee with no power or connections.

A flicker of irritation passed behind Fidel's eyes, though his pleasant expression never wavered. "Of course. Take your time. Just let me know when you've decided."

He turned and walked away.

How dare she refuse? A mere secretary, turning down his offer.

And Margery... that ungrateful woman, dismissing him like he was nothing.

Just wait. Both of them would regret this.
