The Ex-Con Who Conquered the World novel Chapter 99

"Back in our college years, I already knew how you felt—and I felt the same way about you. But I never said a word, because I was leaving the country. I buried those feelings deep inside.

"All these years abroad, I kept up with your life from afar. When I found out you were seeing someone, it tore me apart. I've regretted it ever since.

"Since returning six months ago, I've noticed your care and kindness toward me. It moved me, and those old feelings have only grown stronger. Still, I stayed quiet. I told myself that as long as you were happy with Stefan, I'd simply wish you well from a distance.

"But now... now I see he doesn't deserve you. He's nothing but a cheat—engaged to a woman from the Stewart family right after getting out of prison, seen shopping with other women, completely ignoring how you must feel. Even your pleading couldn't bring him back.

"Why beg for someone like that? Why keep holding onto Margery? A man like him isn't worth your heart.

"And yet here I am—someone who truly cares for you, standing right in front of you. Are you really going to keep looking past me?

Fidel's words poured out, charged with emotion.

Margery stood frozen, utterly stunned.

In a way, this was a confession—a full-blown declaration.

But instead of touching her heart, his passionate outburst sparked irritation and disgust.

She had told him again and again that she loved Stefan. Why was he saying all this? Was he trying to make her sick?

Anger tightened in her chest, her breathing growing shallow. Just as she gathered herself to respond, Fidel stepped forward, offering the bouquet of roses.

"Margery, forget Stefan. Be with me. I'll cherish you, take care of you, and stay by your side for the rest of my life."

A wave of revulsion washed over her.

She didn't understand how he could ignore everything she'd said and how he could confess so boldly after all this time.

Pushing the roses aside, she replied, "I'm sorry, Fidel. I can't accept this. Please don't waste your time on me. You're a good person—you'll find someone better suited for you."

Wasn't this the classic "nice guy" rejection? All his heartfelt words, the roses... just to be labelled as a "good person"?
