Larry Winter, Ervin’s eldest son, said quickly, “Dad, I’ve checked-none of the Winter family has caused trouble or offended anyone lately.”
“Then why did we lose the bid?” Ervin said in a low, stern voice. “On paper, we were a sure bet for the Reed family partnership. Something must have gone wrong behind the scenes.”
Marcus, sitting below them, suddenly said, “Grandpa, could the Locke family be sabotaging us?”
“The Locke family?” Larry turned to Marcus and asked, “Marcus, what does this have to do with the Locke family?”
Marcus explained, “Grandpa, Dad, Bjorn came down hard on me at the auction. Looking back, he overreacted. The Locke family knows Victor is in seclusion, trying to break through to the Transformed Sect Grandmaster. Bjorn understands exactly what that would mean. It makes sense for him to trip us up now so we can’t land the Reed family deal.”
“Bjorn…” Ervin’s old eyes sharpened. He stated slowly, “That man is cunning-we can’t guess his game. Losing the Reed family deal stings, but it won’t break us. Right now, the only thing that matters is whether Victor can advance to Transformed Sect Grandmaster. That decides if our branch can rejoin the main family. Once we do that, the Locke family won’t be worth our time.”
Larry’s face lit up with excitement. He asked cautiously, “Dad, did someone from the main family come?”
Ervin nodded, his voice tight with suppressed excitement. “Yes. A very important figure, no less. Once Victor breaks through, we’ll invite him here to assess us. If he sees our potential, we’ll rise again and take our rightful place in the main family.”
Larry said confidently, “Don’t worry, Dad, Victor will make it to Transformed Sect Grandmaster.”
Marcus’ face burned with excitement and hope. He clenched his fists, waiting for Victor’s breakthrough to lift the Winter family to new heights.
At an airport terminal in a northern city, a middle-aged man in a black jacket with a buzz cut sat alone waiting for his flight. He was lean and muscular, with sharp, rugged features-tough and unyielding.

His eyes were gray, empty of all feeling, cold and indifferent to life itself.
His phone rang suddenly.

“Slaythe, listen to me. Once you’re in River City, you must kill Shane. Our last silver-rank assassin failed, and that hurt the Order’s reputation. Shane must die,” the man on the other end said.

The call ended, and boarding began.
He put his phone away. A cold, killing intent flashed in his eyes, sharp. Then he joined the other passengers and boarded the plane.

Stefan stepped inside the Dynasty Club in River City.
It was still daytime, so the club was closed; it only opened at night.
The gang members inside spotted him at once. They recognized Stefan, and fear flashed across their faces.
That night, in the sixth-floor private room, Stefan had taken down dozens of men sent by Dawson. Even Norris, the vice-leader, had dropped to his knees in front of him.
