Stepping out of the registrar's office, she noticed snowflakes drifting down from the sky once more.
"It's snowing," Jillian remarked softly, holding out her hand to catch a falling flake.
Killian maintained a stoic expression but suddenly stopped in his tracks.
"Want to walk for a bit?" he asked.
The man was usually so domineering, rarely ever seeking anyone's opinion before acting. The fact that he was asking for her consent showed that he understood they were officially strangers now.
Since there was no parking directly in front of the building, they had parked in a nearby lot, meaning they had to walk a short distance anyway.
Jillian didn't decline.
They walked side by side down the path.
The winter landscape felt bleak. The trees were almost entirely stripped of their leaves, their bare branches shivering in the biting wind.
Neither of them spoke a word.
A voice message from Judith chimed through. Jillian replied in a hushed tone, "I've got it."
She was obviously referring to the certificate.
It seemed everyone on her side was eagerly anticipating this exact moment.
Killian heard it but showed zero reaction.
A second later, her phone started pinging relentlessly.
A headache formed behind Jillian's eyes. Without looking, she knew it was a barrage of texts from Mallory.
"Your boyfriend?" Killian suddenly asked.
"No," Jillian answered.
But the rapid-fire notifications wouldn't stop, forcing her to finally pull the phone out.
She tapped on the most recent voice note.
"Don't you think Killian is an absolute psycho? If he had a crush on you, why did he treat you like garbage after you got married?"
Jillian turned to stone, casting an intensely awkward glance at Killian.
"Sorry. Mallory is just getting some facts twisted. I'll clear things up with her."
Killian gave a curt nod.
"What are your plans now that the divorce is final?" he asked.
"Nothing too drastic."
"Leaving the Langley company?"
She nodded.
