Mallory curled her lip. "Maybe it's a case of love turning into hate."
"I have a second piece of evidence," Mallory pressed on. "When Killian was in college, his standing in the family wasn't what it is now. His position as the heir wasn't solidified yet."
"And?" Jillian asked.
"You remember the massive power struggle between the main family and The Rival Branch, right? Sean Quincy basically abandoned the family, forfeiting his inheritance. That made Killian the ultimate target for the other faction."
Jillian frowned. She only knew that Killian's eventual retaliation against his uncle's faction had been famously bloodthirsty, practically forcing them into exile overseas.
As for what his uncle's family had done to him prior to that, she was completely in the dark.
"During college, his uncle was already scheming. He hired hackers to breach Killian's computer, hoping to unearth dark secrets to leak and destroy his chances at succession. But after digging around forever, they found zero dirt. All they managed to scrape up were some useless personal files, including a photo of a girl. That photo was of you."
Jillian immediately shook her head. "That's impossible."
"Don't write it off yet," Mallory said, sliding her phone across the table.
Jillian stared at the screen, genuinely stunned. It was an old picture she had uploaded to the campus forum. If memory served, it was taken during the winter of her sophomore year. With a snowy background, she was bundled up in a thick blue coat and a white knit scarf, rocking straight bangs and a bright, sweet smile.
"This doesn't make sense. I didn't even know Killian when this was taken," Jillian insisted.
She hadn't actually met him—and fallen in love at first sight—until the spring semester began after the holidays.
"Exactly! That proves he was watching you way before you ever formally met him."
Still, Jillian shook her head.
Mallory bombarded her with a few more pieces of evidence, but Jillian methodically dismantled every single one.
That night at home, while sorting out files for her new company, Jillian suddenly paused, her mind drifting to the mention of cornflowers.
Now that Mallory had brought it up, she vaguely remembered that the floral arrangements at that gala really had been dominated by them.
Could Mallory actually be right?
And that photo—had Killian really downloaded it straight from the campus network?
