The Ex-Wife's Burning Elegance novel Chapter 1971

"His mental state was pretty bad back then. I handed him a business card and told him to find me if he ever needed help."

"So, did he find you?" the assistant asked.

Colby gave him a look. "What do you think this is?"

The assistant got it. "So, to repay him for saving your life, you intentionally left some clues for Stella?"

Colby popped open a suitcase and started throwing things in.

"That's part of it. But mostly, I just don't want to deal with someone like him. Damn it, the guy is terrifying. When he first tracked me down, I thought he was having delusions. How could he be so sure someone would come looking for me? But sure enough, not long after, Leonard's people showed up, exactly like he said they would. He wanted to hide his condition, and I couldn't exactly stop him, so I played along. Who knew he was planning to screw Leonard over at the same time? Leonard hired me. If I lie about the diagnosis, Stella's first suspect is obviously going to be Leonard. No one would ever guess that he had set this all up long before Leonard even found me. And honestly, I think screwing Leonard over was just a bonus for him. I bet he did a deep dive into Old Mr. Wyatt and Mr. Burton's networks. That's how he pinpointed me. But seriously, isn't that level of calculation terrifying? With my IQ, I'd probably be helping the guy count the money he made selling me out. Besides, if Leonard finds out I stabbed him in the back, do you think he'll let me live? If we don't run now, what are we waiting for?"

Neither Joshua nor Leonard was someone you wanted to mess with.

Colby wanted absolutely no part in this mess.

Hearing this, the assistant kicked into high gear, helping him pack.

They didn't have much, so they finished quickly.

Just as they were about to bolt, the assistant remembered something else.
