The elder Mrs. Sherwood quickly responded, her tone filled with absolute delight. "Oh! Just the fact that you're willing to come see me makes me so happy."
"I should have visited you sooner, but I've been tied up with too many things lately," Lucy said politely, lifting Seven into a high chair.
Seven sat obediently, his little mouth mumbling softly, "Mom, I want water."
The nanny standing by immediately handed him his sippy cup.
Seven held the cup and took small sips, his eyes darting toward the elder Mrs. Sherwood and Wilma from time to time, quietly thinking to himself: I don't even know them.
As the dishes began arriving at the table, the door to the private room was pushed open.
Bacchus walked in carrying a gift bag. It was the present Kingsley had asked Xavier to buy and deliver to the entrance, which Bacchus had conveniently brought up.
Seeing him, the elder Mrs. Sherwood's expression instantly darkened. "Why are you here?"
She had secretly come to see Lucy and Seven, terrified that Lucy might get the wrong idea. Now, with him here, she couldn't explain it away even if she tried.
"Lucy," Bacchus greeted her first.
"Secretary Sherwood," Lucy replied, her tone flat and concise.
Only then did Bacchus turn to the elder Mrs. Sherwood, explaining himself.
"I thought you ran away because you were mad at me, so I came looking for you. I didn't expect to actually bump into you here."
"You think you're so smart!" The elder Mrs. Sherwood didn't believe a word of it, glaring at him.
"You ruined your blind dates, and now you've learned how to stalk people?"
Bacchus didn't argue further. His gaze landed on Seven in the high chair, and the corners of his lips curled up. "You must be Seven. Here's a toy for you. I'm your older... I'm your uncle."
He handed the gift over as he spoke.
Seven stared at the toy but didn't reach out to take it. He merely said politely, "Hello, Uncle."
She stood up to ladle a small bowl of soup for Seven, instructing him gently, "Wait for it to cool down before you drink it. Don't touch it yet."
Seven, still chewing his food, nodded obediently.
Taking the opportunity, the elder Mrs. Sherwood spoke up, her tone filled with remorse. "Lucy, my grandson was a complete fool to you. It pains me that we didn't teach him to be a better man."
I invited you out today purely because I wanted to see the two of you. I have no intention of pressuring you or fighting for custody."
Lucy nodded, picked up her wine glass, and raised it toward the older woman. "Thank you for caring about us, Grandma."
"The fact that you're willing to see me fills me with both guilt and joy."
After she finished speaking, the elder Mrs. Sherwood's gaze fell back onto Seven in the high chair. Her heart felt both full and heavy, swimming in an indescribable mix of emotions.
For the rest of the meal, the adults chatted around the boy. Seven didn't participate much, reasoning that since he didn't really know them, he shouldn't talk too much.
When the dinner finally wrapped up, the elder Mrs. Sherwood watched the trio leave and let out a long sigh. "Kingsley just doesn't have the luck for a happy ending!"
