Chapter 442 Last Test
Deon turned to look at her.
The last light of sunset fell across Elizabeth’s face, tracing her features in soft gold.
Her eyes gleamed in the dusk, and the faintest hint of a smile touched the corners of her mouth.
That smile only made the unease in Deon’s chest grow stronger.
“Moving on,” he said. “We’ll check another ship.”
Elizabeth shrugged. “Suit yourself.”
They continued checking each ship, one by one.
Every result was the same. Nothing was found.

Kellen’s expression grew darker with every passing minute. His assistants looked exhausted, and impatience was written all over their faces.
They scanned the ships with all kinds of instruments, removed several hull panels, and even brought out a portable energy detector. However, they still found nothing.
It was almost as if the reflected blast had never happened.
By the time night had fully fallen, they had reached the seventh ship.
It was the smallest assault craft, and it also had the weakest defenses of all the ships.
It sat quietly in its berth, its hull giving off a dull metallic sheen under the lights.
Kellen led his assistants aboard and began the inspection as if it was just another routine check.
Deon stood below, staring up at the ship. For some reason, a strange feeling rose inside him.
He could not explain it.
He had a feeling that this ship seemed different from the others.
“Colonel Barron.” Elizabeth had come over to stand beside him without him noticing. “Your people have been working all afternoon. They must be tired. Why don’t you stop by the cafeteria and grab something to eat? Our cook made Halloumi today. It smells amazing.”
Deon looked at her.
She still wore a smile on her face, as if the whole day’s investigation was nothing more than a game to her.
“Ms. Schofield,” he suddenly asked, “aren’t you worried?”
“Worried about what?”
“That we might actually find something.”

“Colonel Barron,” she

She paused, her gaze drifting toward the assault ship.
“Although I am a little worried about something else”
“What would that be?”
“That Professor Malone of yours,” Elizabeth said. “He seems to have a short fuse”
Deon froze for a second. Before he could understand what she meant, a burst of shouting came from inside the ship.
“I don t believe it!”
It was Kellen’s voice, sharp and high, filled with obvious anger and embarrassment.
Deon’s chest tightened, and he rushed toward the ship.
Elizabeth followed behind him at an unhurried pace.
The moment Deon boarded, he saw a scene that made his blood run cold.

Kellen was standing in the corridor outside the cockpit, an energy gun raised in his hand. It was the portable weapon he had brought with him for emergency field tests. He was pointing the gun right at the wall.
The assistants beside him had gone pale and were trying to stop him.
“Professor Malone! Don’t!”
“Let me test it!” Kellen’s face was red, the veins in his neck bulging, his glasses crooked on his nose. “I refuse to believe this thing can really deflect an energy blast! The energy cannon must have malfunctioned! One test and we’ll know!”
Deon’s mind went blank.
“Stop!”
His roar echoed off the walls, but it was too late.
Kellen pulled the trigger.
A thin beam of energy shot from his gun, heading straight for the wall.
Just as the beam was about to hit the wall, a blinding white light appeared out of nowhere.
It was exactly the same as the light from earlier that day.
Like a transparent film, it instantly covered that section of the wall.
The energy beam collided with the barrier.
There was no sound.

The beam didn’t pierce through the barrier either.
The next second, the energy beam rebounded with ten times the speed.
Professor Malone did not even have time to react before the beam shot through his right shoulder.
