When Elizabeth met his gaze, she let out a soft sigh.

“I told you,” she said. Though her voice was quiet, it landed heavily on everyone there. “If something goes wrong during the investigation, I wouldn’t be responsible.”
Deon opened his mouth, but not a single word came out.
The assistants huddled in the corner, their bodies trembling.
They looked at Elizabeth like they were looking at a monster, or rather like a god wearing human skin.
The incident had shattered every bit of professional confidence they had.
They had spent the entire day scanning this exact ship with their instruments and found nothing.
They had watched Kellen pull the trigger, watched that light appear, and watched it rebound and tear through a human body.
The deflection had been real.
They were just unable to detect it.
They hadn’t been able to find it.
“Colonel… Colonel Barron…” one assistant said in a shaking voice. “We… we..
He couldn’t finish his sentence.
Deon stood and walked toward Elizabeth, one step at a time.
His legs felt weak, but he forced himself to stay steady.
When he reached her, he stopped.
He looked into her eyes.
Even in the dim light, they were still clear and bright, touched with the faintest hint of a smile.
“What was that?” he asked.
His voice came out rough and hoarse.
Elizabeth looked at him for a long time.
Then, she smiled.
“Colonel Barron,” she said, “didn’t you just see it for yourself?”
She turned and walked toward the hatch.

When she reached the doorway, she stopped. Without looking back, she spoke again, “Have your people carry him out. He made a mess on the floor, and someone will have to clean it tomorrow.”

Then she walked out.
Her footsteps slowly faded away
Only a few trembling assistants, a wounded man groaning on the floor, and Deon were left frozen in place.
He stared at that hatch for a long time.
Her final words kept echoing in his mind.
Didn’t you just see it for yourself?
He had indeed seen it.
He had seen the deflected beam punch through a man’s shoulder with terrifying lease.
But he still had no idea what it was.
He only knew that they had been unable to detect it.

The atmosphere in the cafeteria was a world apart from the tense chaos among the Fifth Military.
When Elizabeth led Dwayne and his group into the cafeteria, the staff had already arranged several long tables into a large U–shape. The tables were covered with steaming dishes.
The pan–seared halloumi was golden on the outside, warm and salty–soft inside. Caramelized roasted sweet potatoes were piled high in a golden heap. The boiled vegetables were bright, tender, and still crisp. There was also a huge bubbling dish of roasted vegetable casserole, fragrant and rich.
“Chief McGee, right this way!” Elizabeth smiled warmly as she led Dwayne toward the head of the table. “You all worked hard today. Our farm doesn’t have anything fancy, just some fruits and vegetables we grew ourselves. I hope you don’t mind. Have anything you like.”
Dwayne stared at the table, his eyes almost going wide.
He had barely eaten at lunch. After all, under those circumstances, anyone would have lost their appetite.
Then he had spent the whole afternoon on edge, and his stomach had been growling for a white.
Now, seeing this table full of hot food and smelling that rich aroma, he felt like he had come back to life.
“Ms. Schofield… this is too much…” he said politely, but his eyes were already glued to the halloumi.

“No such thing!” Elizabeth pressed him into his seat without giving him a chance to refuse. “You came all this way and didn’t ever get a proper meal. That’s a failure on our part. We have to make up for it tonight!”
