Chapter 520 Former Coworker
“Newman, Leyla invited me to eat lunch with her today!
“And Hansel asked if he could see pictures of the farm later.
“My teacher said the food we brought was the most delicious food there today!”
As Newman listened, warmth slowly filled his chest like gentle flowing water.
Looking at the confidence returning to his brother’s eyes and the bright smile finally back on his sister’s face, he suddenly felt that every hardship of the past three years had been worth it.
The lights in Room 406 stayed on very late that night. The three siblings sat together planning their fature.
They wanted to rent an apartment with its own bathroom, buy Irene a new school uniform, and send Korbin to the mech model training class he’d always dreamed about.
By Sunday evening, it was time for Newman to return to Planet A001.
When his siblings walked him downstairs, there was no sadness on their faces–only anticipation.
“Newman, are you bringing strawberries back next week?” Irene asked.
“And also the Rainbow Corn!” Korbin added quickly. “My classmates said it’s really delicious!”
Newman smiled and nodded. “I’ll bring both. Take care of yourselves at home. Korbin, remember to double–check the doors and windows at night. Irene, don’t stay up too late studying.”
“Got it! Be careful on the way back!”
Traveling from the Seventh District to the interstellar airport required transferring between two hover buses. The first bus arrive quickly. Newman tapped his transit card and found a seat by the window.
Outside, the cramped, chaotic buildings of the slums rapidly disappeared behind him, gradually replaced by the orderly skyscrapers of the commercial district.

Neon lights flickered on one after another, outlining the city against the darkening evening sky.
The transfer station for the second bus was located in the bustling downtown area, only one street away from the Seafarm Supermarket.
By the time Newman got off carrying the insulated case, night had fully fallen. Streetlights and holographic billboards lit the roa as brightly as daytime.
Several people were already waiting at the station. Newman glanced at the electronic signboard. The next bus wouldn’t arrive f another 12 minutes.
Subconsciously, he moved toward the corner of the platform and lowered his head to check the seal on the insulated case.
Fulvio had lent him this case. It came with a miniature cooling system and anti–gravity device. It was extremely valuable, so hel

“Well, well. Isn’t this Newman?”

A familiar and grating voice suddenly rang out like an icy needle stabbing into his ears. Newman’s body stiffened as he slowly looked up.
At the other end of the platform, five people in Seafarm Supermarket’s dark blue uniforms were staring straight at him.
Leading them was Cyndi, the very supervisor who had hired him irito Seafarm years ago.
Four employees stood beside her, all former coworkers who had once worked with him.
The chubby man in front was Donald Leary, a veteran from the logistics department. He loved dumping all the dirty, exhausting work on the new hires while calling it “training.”
During Newman’s years at Seafarm Group, Donald often made things difficult for him and ordered him around.
“So it really is you, Newman.” Donald walked over first, an undisguised sneer plastered across his face. “I heard you jumped ship t Tycoon Farm. What happened? Couldn’t survive over there, so now you’re crawling back to Seafarm to beg for scraps?”
His voice was loud enough that other passengers waiting at the station turned to look.
The other Seafarm employees also moved in, forming a loose semicircle that boxed Newman into the corner of the platform.
Cyndi stood a little farther away with her arms crossed, her face unreadable.
But her sharp eyes swept over Newman from head to toe, openly sizing him up and judging him in a way that made him deeply uncomfortable.
“Donald,” Newman said as steadily as he could, “I just came home to visit my brother and sister. I’m heading back to work on Planet A001 now.”
“Planet A001? Damn, that’s far just to make a living.”
A tall, skinny employee chimed in mockingly.
It was Michael Walker from logistics, the guy who always loved hyping Donald up. “You quit without even handling your resignal properly back then. You’re really ungrateful. Seafarm supported you for years, and you ran when the business got rough. Now th business is booming again, everybody got raises. Do you regret it?”
