There was also a small dish of bright red dipping sauce, garnished with a few mint leaves,

Callista set the tray on the wooden table beneath the porch and called out to Ronald and the other military visitors scattered nearby. “We put together a little afternoon snack for everyone. You’ve all worked hard. Come take a break, have some tea, and grab something to eat.”

Ronald’s first reaction was to turn it down.

He was here on official business, after all. His job was just to observe and take notes, but sitting down to eat and drink at the farm still felt a little out of place.

Unfortunately, his nose decided before he could. The warm scent of tea and freshly baked cake kept drifting his way, impossible to ignore.

Then his stomach betrayed him with a low growl. It was loud enough that Elias, sitting about six feet away, glanced up from what he was doing and looked over.

Elias was the logistics officer for the Fifth Military. His main reason for coming along this time was to conduct an inspection.

As soon as he arrived at the farm, he stopped paying attention to the Fifth Military’s activities and focused entirely on the farm’s vegetables, fruit, and eggs, calculating how he could persuade the owner to increase their supply shipments.

Then he heard the growl.

A faint blush rose to Ronald’s face. He got to his feet and headed for the table, already coming with a perfectly reasonable justification. If he didn’t try the farm’s products himself, how

up

was he supposed to write an accurate report on Tycoon Farm’s production quality?

That sounded good enough to him. So he pulled out a chair and sat down.

It didn’t take long for him to realize he wasn’t the only one giving in.

Hudson Ancrum from the Third Military had beaten him to the table.

He had come specifically for Tycoon Farm’s ingredients in the first place and needed no

excuse at all.

Next came Elias from the Fifth Military. He was too lazy to come up with an excuse and simply picked up a teacup and took a sip.

After drinking, Elias fell silent for a moment. He lowered his eyes to the pale golden tea in the cup, then looked

up and asked, “This water… did your farm filter it yourselves?”

Still busy serving refreshments, Callista smiled and nodded. “It’s groundwater that seeps through our farmland. We run it through sand filtration and activated charcoal treatment. We don’t make many mineral adjustments, so it keeps the natural flavor of the water source.

Elias said nothing and took another sip.

He drank very slowly, as though using the tip of his tongue to carefully distinguish every subtle layer in the water.

He had spent more than half his life handling logistics and supplies for the Fifth Military. He had drunk water from dozens of star systems and hundreds of settlements, from premium recycled water in the Central Sector to roughly treated surface water on the Outer Sector. Not one of them had ever given him this sensation.

It was crisp, sweet, and smooth. Once it entered his mouth, it left behind an indescribable freshness, as though every molecule of water were gently melting across his tongue.

He set down the cup, gave it a serious look, and then continued drinking.

Next came the plate of golden cake.

Callista carefully cut the egg sponge cake into small bite-sized squares.

Each piece was evenly sized, with a slightly rounded top and an inviting golden-brown color.

The edges carried just the right touch of browning, releasing a pure, warm egg aroma.

Ronald hesitated for a moment. Then he reached out and picked up a piece. First, he carefully examined its appearance, then he took a cautious bite.

The first thing he noticed was the softness.

A delicate, moist, springy softness. His teeth met almost no resistance as they sank into the cake, and then a rich, pure egg flavor rapidly spread through his mouth.

That egg

flavor was unlike any egg product he had ever tasted in the kingdom.

The richness of natural fats, combined with just the right amount of sweetness and the faintest hint of sea-salt savoriness, unfolded layer after layer across his tongue, lingering long and

clean.

Ronald chewed a few times, then froze in the middle of swallowing.
