He carried a multifunction portable analyzer capable of performing rapid preliminary screening of collected biological samples.
After Gunther finished collecting air and surface samples, Elias took the first batch of samples from him and began running them through the analyzer.
His work area had been temporarily set up beneath the porch outside the farmhouse. A folding table held the analyzer, a centrifuge, a refrigerated storage box, and various supplies.
After the evaluation had been underway for an hour, Evander walked the entire boundary of the farm’s pasture and finally stopped outside the fence of the Cluckoo Chicken enclosure.
With both hands tucked into the pockets of his inspection suit, he watched the dozen or so fluffy golden–brown creatures through the fence.
Some were pecking at food on the ground. Some rolled in the sand, taking dust baths. Some crowded together and groomed each other’s feathers. One sat on a roost with its eyes half closed, dozing, occasionally letting out a low, satisfied rumble from its throat.
Evander watched them quietly. His expression remained calm, but something seemed to be turning deep within his eyes.
He pulled out his wrist terminal and recorded three videos and more than a dozen photos of the enclosure. Then he opened one of the files and zoomed in on the image.
One Cluckoo Chicken was pecking at a piece of potato on the ground. After picking it up, it tilted its head back and swallowed. Its neck moved in an extremely natural curve, and the swallowing motion in its throat was clearly visible.
Evander stared at the footage for a long time before shutting off the terminal and slipping it back into his pocket.
He turned his head and saw Elizabeth approaching from across the yard, carrying two glasses. When she got closer, she handed one to him.
“Just some water,” she said. “You’ve been at this for a while. I figured you were probably thirsty.”
Evander glanced down at the glass. The water inside was crystal clear, and there was no condensation on the sides.
He hesitated for about a second before accepting it and taking a sip.
The water was cool. It carried a faint sweetness that was hard to describe, completely different from the endlessly fittered and mineral–adjusted recycled water he usually drank.
He did not comment. Holding the glass in his hand, he stood beside the fence in silence for a moment before saying something that caught Elizabeth off guard.
“These Cluckoo Chicken–how long have you been raising them?”
Elizabeth looked at him but did not answer night away, as though she were weighing the reason behind his question.
Then she said, “It’s been almost two months since the first batch hatched
Evander nodded and did hot ask anything else.

In the distance, Rafferty from the First Military stood quietly beneath a small tree outside the evaluation area with his recording equipment. His camera remained steadily focused on every detail of the evaluation team’s work, while the tiny red light on the recorder blinked almost invisibly in the sunlight.
He was determined not to miss a single moment and give the Fifth Military any chance to exploit a loophole.
Compared to the people from the First and Fifth Military, the representatives from the other divisions were taking things much more casually.
After all, they were mainly there to fill out the numbers and take a look around.
Ronald Stige from the Second Military carried a data collection terminal that was even more noticeable than he was. He made twe laps around the outside of the farm, photographed everything that needed photographing, recorded every required coordinate, and then discovered he had finished his assignment ahead of schedule.
The evaluation team’s testing would take at least another two or three hours before any preliminary results were available. During that time, he could neither interfere with the evaluation process nor stand around doing nothing, so he found a place to sit and wait.
He chose a long wooden bench beneath the farmhouse porch. Right beside it stood Elias’s folding table covered with analytical equipment.
He had barely sat down when he cant–cing from
