Chapter 571 I Did Nothing Wrong
Chapter 571 I Did Nothing Wrong
Sevyn led the others, escorting the men with broken arms and Gunther toward the warehouse
Before Evander was taken away, he stopped as he passed Ronald.
He looked at this younger officer, his eyes full of mixed feelings. “You…”
Ronald didn’t look away.
He stood at attention and gave a perfect military salute.

“Colonel Madsen, no matter what the relationship is between the Second Military and the Fifth Military we’re soldiers. Our duty isn’t to cover for our own people. It’s to uphold military rules.
He lowered his hand. His voice was quiet, but firm. “I’m sorry. But I did nothing wrong.”
Evander looked at him for a long time.
Then he smiled.
It was a painful smile–worse than crying.
“You didn’t do anything wrong,” he said, his voice rough and barely clear. “We were the ones who were
wrong.”
Then he was taken away.
Ronald stood in place, watching his back, his eyes steady and firm.
He turned around and walked up to Elizabeth. “Ms. Schofield, I’m willing to stay at the farm and help with the investigation. If you need a witness, I can testify.”
Elizabeth looked at him. “Lieutenant Stige, aren’t you afraid of offending the Fifth Military?”
Ronald thought for a moment. “I am.”
Then he said, “But I’m more afraid of disgrace. If we let Evander walk away today, it won’t be just the Fifth Military that will be disgraced.”
Elizabeth said nothing.
She looked down at her cup.
It was empty–no water left at all.
She sighed, then smiled and said, “Lieutenant Stige, can you get me some water?”
Ronald froze for a second. Then he pulled an unopened bottle of water from his pocket and handed it to
her.

Elizabeth took it, twisted off the cap, and drank a long gulp.
The cool water slid down her throat, easing the burning feeling in her stomach.

Rafferty walked over and stood beside her, watching as Desmond and the others escorted the Fifth Military personnel into the warehouse.
“Ms. Schofield, the First Military will follow up on everything that happened today. Until the Military Inspection Committee arrives, they’re under your custody. Once the committee gets here, we’ll take the into our custody.”
Elizabeth looked at him and nodded. “All right. Thank you.”
Inside the pen, the golden–brown Cluckoo Chicken had already returned to its perch. It hopped up, tucked in its wings, closed its eyes, and went to sleep.
The afternoon sunlight quietly spread across the pens that had just been through a riot and had just witnessed that white light. Everything was peaceful again.
Only the pools of blood on the ground proved that what had happened moments ago was real.
Elizabeth stood at the entrance to the pen, drinking her water as she watched the prisoners being led away. Her expression was calm.
Only she knew that her legs were still a little numb, her hands were still shaking slightly, and her mind kept replaying that white flash.
It wasn’t fear. It was heartbreak.
Activating the defensive circle had burned through a huge amount of energy.
She’d make sure the Fifth Military paid for it.
She finished the last sip of water and tossed the empty bottle into the recycling bin.
Then she turned and headed toward the warehouse.
Desmond and the others were still inside, counting people and sealing the evidence. She needed to check on them.
After taking a few steps, she stopped and looked back at the military observers who were still standing in the yard.
She said, “Everyone, I’d appreciate it if you could be witnesses to what happened today. It’s not that I don’t respect the military. Some people simply don’t value their own lives.”
Rafferty nodded.
Elias said nothing, but he gave a slight nod in agreement.
Hudson simply raised the cigarette in his hand toward her in acknowledgment.
