Ava laughed until she nearly could not breathe. It took her a while to finally calm down.

Not long after that, Curtis and Bennie arrived together.

The moment Bennie saw Ava, he greeted her first, then turned to Ryan and explained, “The event ran over by about half an hour. You guys must’ve been waiting a while, right?”

Ryan shook his head. “Not really. We only got here a little while ago too.”

“I’ve known him since he was twenty,” Soren said. “You could say I’ve watched him grow all the way here. He has that spoiled young brat personality. When he gets mad, he fears absolutely no one, and that sharp mouth of his has offended more people than I can count.

“Half the time, I’ve been the one cleaning up behind him. If I’m being honest, after all these years, I practically feel like some exhausted old father. He was born into a good family, but he’s soft-hearted underneath it all.”

After a pause, he added, “He’s been in this business for years and still never lost himself. He’s never touched any of the dirty things people here get mixed up in. On the outside, he looks hard to deal with, all wild and arrogant, impossible to rein in. But underneath? He’s just a soft- hearted fool when it comes to love.”

That description made Ava pause.

Inside the room, Ryan stood a little taller than the other two. All three of them were absurdly handsome.

Bennie had that gentle, dependable air. With his fair skin, he even carried a faintly melancholic, princely kind of charm.

Ryan, compared to them, was all brightness and edge.

Ava’s gaze settled on him as she said quietly, “Ryan really is wonderful.”

Soren looked briefly surprised, then only smiled and said nothing more.
