After saying that, Ava opened her Holoband, searched nearby restaurants, and quickly placed an order for dinner.
Then she looked at Queenie and asked, “Do you want to go outside for a while? I can take you out for some air. We’ll come back in about half an hour, and the food should be here by then.”
Queenie gave a small nod.
Ava helped her down from the hospital bed, settled her into the wheelchair, and slowly pushed her into the courtyard behind the hospital.
The sun was sinking low, painting the sky in deep red and gold.
Queenie sat quietly in the wheelchair, looking at the evening clouds, her face calm in a way that almost felt unreal.
After a long silence, she finally began to speak, her voice low and unhurried.
“The first day the Yeager family brought me back with them, the sky looked like this too. The sunset was beautiful. There were flowers everywhere in the garden. And the house… it was enormous, like a castle.”
She stared ahead.
“Back then, I had never seen a house that large. It was so magnificent, so beautiful, that I thought the people living there had to be royalty. I even believed that although I’d lost my family, I had somehow been given another home.”
Then she let out a faint, self-mocking laugh.
“They took me in, but they never officially adopted me. My place there was always uncertain. Even so, they never shortchanged me. Food, clothes, education-everything was provided at the same level as the other wealthy heirs.
“I used to think Mr. Yeager was a genuinely kind man. I wasn’t related to them in any way, and yet they still spent so much time, money, and effort raising me.”
Her voice dropped even lower.
“It took me a long time to realize how foolish I was. Nothing that looks free is ever truly free. Fate always asks for payment in the end.”

“And I…” she said, eyes fixed somewhere far away, “was just a bird locked inside the Yeager family’s cage.”
Ava said nothing. She only listened.
“On the night of my twentieth birthday, I woke up and found Rodney lying next to me. I thought I was losing my mind. Even if I wasn’t really their daughter on paper, I had always still thought of him as an older brother.
“He threatened me. I was too afraid to tell Adam. And from that moment on, I became something Rodney could twist in his hand whenever he wanted.
<
“When I was twenty-three, Jerome found out. I begged him to save me. I thought he would pull me out of it.”
Her lips curved, but there was nothing warm in that expression.
“He didn’t. After that, I became a toy for both of them.”
She spoke as if she were describing someone else’s life.
“When I turned twenty-five, Adam told Rodney to marry me. Jerome used that chance to say he wanted to marry me too. I sat there and listened while they discussed which one of them I belonged to, as if I were some object.
“In the end, I thought, fine. Marriage, then marriage. It only meant I was being handed to two beasts instead of one. I once thought those two had already sunk as low as they could go.”
She laughed softly again.
“I was wrong. After the marriage, I found out they were worse than I had ever imagined. Rodney had a cruel temper. Whenever he was angry, frustrated, or simply in a bad mood, he took it out on me. Hitting me. Swearing at me. Torturing me. To him, it was entertainment.
“And Jerome…” She paused. “Jerome wore gentleness on the outside, but underneath, he was colder than Rodney ever was. Neither of them was worth anything, but I still endured it. Because I wanted to survive. And because I already knew that no one was coming to drag me out of that hell.”
She lowered her gaze.
“Two years ago, I Awakened. For one brief moment, I thought maybe things would change. I thought maybe once I wasn’t ordinary anymore, they might treat me differently.”
Then she shook her head. “But I forgot one thing. Beasts are beasts because they’re beasts. I

became a resource. One day, they would send me to one man. The next day, to another. To them, I was just something to be traded. As long as I could bring them profit, they could throw me into anyone’s bed they pleased.
“I fought back. All it earned me was even more degradation. This time, when he tried to humiliate me like that again, I looked at that old man-old enough to be my grandfather-and everything I’d lived through over the years finally pushed me to the edge.
“I wanted to die. I truly didn’t want to keep living like that, so I resisted with everything I had. And what I got in return… was even crueler.”
Her voice thinned. “He wanted to make one thing clear to me-this is what happens when you refuse to obey.”
Ava felt as though her chest was being torn open just listening. “Queenie, don’t say any more. Please.”
Her voice shook.
“None of that was ever your fault. The only ones at fault are those monsters.”
