David’s eyebrows pulled together. “Who gave you that?”
Ella just arched hers and shot back, “My boyfriend did.”
Boyfriend?
David’s expression turned icy in a heartbeat. He remembered her saying something about having a boyfriend before. Now, here it was again.
“So, is this the rich boyfriend you mentioned?”
“Yeah, that’s him.”
David let out a cold laugh. “A guy who buys you fancy cars and puts you up in a mansion... That’s pretty extravagant. Rockford Bay isn’t that big, you know. I honestly can’t think of anyone who fits the bill.”
Ella smiled sweetly. “Mr. Harmon, if you can’t figure out who my boyfriend is, that’s your problem, not mine. I’m heading home.”
She moved to leave, but David blocked her way. “Ella, you should really get a job. With your education, you owe it to yourself to build some value, not just spin stories about some rich boyfriend.”
He clearly didn’t buy the idea of her dating someone who was both wealthy and good-looking.
Ella didn’t bother to explain. Wyatt had already arrived in Rockford Bay, so David would see for himself soon enough.
She pushed past him, firm and direct. “My life isn’t any of your business.”
With that, she disappeared inside.
David stood there with his hands on his hips, watching her door close in his face. His mood darkened. He couldn’t shake the feeling that Ella was hiding something, that there were secrets she was keeping from him. It bothered him more than he wanted to admit.
...
The next day, Ella and Wyatt walked into a high-end boutique. Wyatt grinned. “Go on, Ella. Pick out whatever you like. Today, I’m treating you.”
Ella nodded. “Yeah, just picking out some things.”
Maureen leaned in with a smug look. “Ella, we have some huge news. Want to hear it?”
Before Ella could answer, Grandma Jill jumped in, laughing. “Ella, do you remember when we invested with Doctor E? Our money multiplied ten times over. We’re rich now!”
Grandma Jill shot Ella a pointed look. “I remember you said Doctor E was a fraud. Honestly, I think you were just jealous.
“Sure, you’re a genius and all, but look at you now. First, you married Mr. Harmon and played housewife. Then you got divorced and now you’re just drifting, doing nothing. You really can’t compare to Maureen and Jessa.
“Now, my two granddaughters have brought me out shopping. Having them by my side is all I could ever want.”
Grandma Jill squeezed Jessa’s and Maureen’s hands, her face glowing with pride and the need to show off.
Ella couldn’t help but laugh at the mention of Doctor E. She raised an eyebrow, amused. “So Doctor E multiplied your money ten times? Wow, that’s impressive.”
