“Someone who actually knows Doctor E, obviously,” David said. “Maureen, aren’t you Mr. Lynch’s star student? Maybe you could talk to him. Or…”
“Or who?” Jessa asked, her voice tight with worry.
“Wyatt told me he knows Doctor E pretty well. He also said Doctor E is a lady. You could ask him, see what he knows.”
David hung up. Maureen stepped forward. Before, panic had made it impossible to think clearly, but now, thanks to David, they finally had a plan. They could go to Mr. Lynch or try Wyatt.
“We should go to Mr. Lynch right now,” Maureen said without hesitation.
“Yeah, let’s go,” Jessa agreed.
…
When the Irvine family showed up at the Lynch residence, Ava recognized Jessa right away and didn’t bother hiding her attitude.
“Sorry, but Mr. Lynch isn’t home. You can’t come in.”
Jessa’s face went pale. Normally, she’d just turn around and leave, but this time she needed a favor. She had no choice but to swallow her pride. In a soft voice, she tried again. “We really need to talk to Mr. Lynch. It’s urgent. Could you please let him know we’re here?”
Ava let out a cold laugh. “People say it’s urgent every day. Am I supposed to let everyone in? Who do you think you are?”
Ava hadn’t forgotten how Jessa and Sarah had treated Lilly last time. There was no way she was going to be nice.
Maureen stepped forward, her voice rushed. “I’m Mr. Lynch’s student. I really need to see him.”
Ava gave her a quick look and muttered, “You’re all the same.”
Maureen felt completely shut down.
The Irvines stood outside, growing more anxious by the second, pacing around without a clue what to do.
Just then, a sleek car pulled up in the driveway. Mr. Lynch had come home.
When Wyatt said it, they hadn’t really believed him. But hearing it from Mr. Lynch made it sink in. It was true.
Grandma Jill’s face lost all color. She let out a frustrated sigh. “I thought Doctor E would be the perfect son-in-law. I even dreamed Maureen and Jessa could have a double wedding, with Mr. Harmon and Doctor E together. It would have been the event of the century. Our family would have been on top of the world.”
Blow after blow, all her dreams came crashing down.
Mr. Lynch looked at Grandma Jill, a mysterious smile on his face. “Your family could have been on top of the world.”
Rachel frowned, confused. “What do you mean, Mr. Lynch?”
He didn’t explain, just added, “But you threw that chance away yourselves.”
Grandma Jill was even more lost. What was he talking about?
Logan and Peter were starting to panic. “Mr. Lynch, our home and our company are both gone. We might have to sleep on the street tonight. Please, can you help us? We’d be so grateful.”
