Oh god.
Jessa sucked in a sharp breath, stunned by what she just heard. David was actually telling her to get down on her knees and beg Ella.
She took a couple of shaky steps back, almost losing her balance until Rachel caught her. “Mr. Harmon, how could you do this to Jessa?” Rachel blurted out, her voice shaking. “You’re just helping Ella hurt her.”
David shot Rachel a cold look. “And you? Isn’t Ella your own daughter? What about everything you’ve done?”
Rachel had no reply to that. She just stood there, speechless.
Ella’s clear, steady gaze landed on Jessa. “So, Jessa, are you going to kneel or not? My time’s valuable. I don’t want to waste another second on you.”
Lilly let out a laugh. “Jessa, if you don’t kneel now, next time you might have to take a number and wait your turn.”
Jessa, already pale, somehow looked even whiter.
Ella didn’t give her another glance. “Looks like you haven’t decided. I’m leaving.”
“Ella, come on.”
Lilly linked arms with Ella and they turned to go.
Jessa’s fists clenched at her sides. She couldn’t take it anymore. She shouted after them, her voice cracking, “Fine, Ella! I’ll do it!”
Ella stopped and turned, her expression unreadable.
Jessa dropped to her knees with a dull thud.
In front of everyone in Rockford Bay who mattered, Jessa knelt to Ella.
Her eyes filled with tears. This was the most humiliating moment of her entire life. “Ella, please, I’m begging you. Save me.”
The question made Grandma Jill and Rachel go stiff.
Ella pressed on. “How did my father die? Who killed him? I want the truth. Three days from now, at his grave, I want everyone who had a hand in his death to kneel there, confess your crimes, and turn yourselves in.”
Grandma Jill and Rachel stared at Ella. Her clear eyes were icy and fierce, like a blade drawn and ready to strike.
Ella’s voice was steady. “You think tonight is the end? No. This is just the beginning. You’ve lived off my father’s death for years, enjoying money and power at his expense. Now it’s time for you to pay it all back.”
With that, Ella turned and walked away, her graceful figure disappearing into the night.
Grandma Jill and Rachel finally got it. Ella had come tonight to declare war. Making Jessa and Maureen kneel was just her warning shot. Everything was only getting started.
…
When the party finally ended, David stepped outside. Grandma Jill, Rachel, and Jessa rushed over to him. “Mr. Harmon, are you really just going to stand by and let Ella take down the Irvine family?”
