Jessa stared at David with teary eyes, hoping he would say something to make her feel better.
David’s face was unreadable. Instead, he asked, “How did Ella’s father really die? Who in the Irvine family is the killer?”
Grandma Jill and Rachel went quiet.
David didn’t say anything else. Aiden pulled up in the Rolls-Royce, and David got in and left.
...
At the Irvine family estate, the whole place was silent, almost like the air had been sucked out of the old house. Grandma Jill sat on the sofa, surrounded by shattered pieces of everything that had been on the coffee table.
Her collector’s vases and antiques were all broken on the floor. These had always been her treasures, the kinds of things everyone was warned to handle with extra care.
Now the floor was a disaster, and the maids stood in the corners, too scared to even breathe loudly.
Everyone of the family was there. No one dared skip out.
Even after trashing her favorite things, Grandma Jill was still fuming. She snapped, “Useless. Every single one of you! None of you can compare to Ella.”
“She grew up in the countryside, but she’s a genius from Harvard. She’s Doctor E. If she were really my granddaughter, I’d be the most respected woman in Rockford Bay.”
“Now Ella’s got us under her heel. We can’t do a thing about it. It’s all because you’re all hopeless.”
Peter and Logan had just come back from the company. They’d heard the news about Ella being Doctor E, but it still felt unreal.
Jessa and Maureen just stared, shocked.
Grandma Jill went on, her voice distant. “It was pouring rain that night. Jon died in his room. He fought so hard, we could barely hold him down. When the poison finally took over, he just kept calling Ella’s name. He never even closed his eyes.”
Even after all these years, Rachel, Peter, and Logan hadn’t forgotten.
Ella had once asked if they ever had nightmares, if they ever dreamed of Jon coming back as a ghost to get revenge. They had.
Logan said, “Jon loved Ella more than anything. We thought if we sent her away to the countryside, that would be the end of it. The Irvine family could finally have peace. But she came back. And now she wants justice for him.”
Peter’s voice was bleak. “If Ella really goes through with this, our whole family will end up in prison. There’s no way out of this.”
