Ella arched an elegant eyebrow. “Mr. Harmon, Jessa. What a surprise to see you both here.”
Jessa’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “Of course you didn’t want to run into us, Ella. You’re scared someone might catch you in one of your little scandals.”
Dr. Wilson, always loyal to his boss at Herbs Life, stepped in right away. “Ms. Irvine, is it really necessary to be so rude?”
Jessa shot back without missing a beat. “Dr. Wilson, why are you sticking up for her? Does your wife know you’re out having dinner with Ella?”
Dr. Wilson hesitated, clearly flustered. “I…”
Ella just held up her hand, motioning for him to step back. He quietly moved behind her.
She turned to Jessa, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “Jessa, you seem to be hinting at something. Are you suggesting I have some kind of improper relationship with Dr. Wilson?”
Jessa let out a cold laugh. “Herbs Life is the biggest medical company around. It’s famous, everyone talks about it. Of course Dr. Wilson gets plenty of attention. I get why you’d want to use your looks to get close to him, Ella.”
Dr. Wilson stared at Jessa like she was out of her mind.
Jessa kept going. “But Dr. Wilson is married. Can’t you have a little self-respect, Ella? Isn’t Wyatt enough for you? Or do you really need to chase after other men too?”
Ella could see Jessa had totally gotten the wrong idea, but she wasn’t surprised. She gave a little smirk, her lips curving up. “Jessa, you know what they say. Some people are so filthy themselves, they see filth everywhere they look.”
Jessa’s face twisted with anger. “You—”
At that moment, David stepped forward. “That’s enough.”
He turned to Jessa, his tone serious. “Ms. Irvine, you really shouldn’t get so worked up. Your heart condition is getting worse. If Doctor E won’t help you, no one else can. Honestly, if I were you, I’d be trying my best to stay on her good side.”
Jessa went pale in an instant, her bravado evaporating.
Ella watched her, totally unmoved. She didn’t feel an ounce of sympathy. The Irvine family had brought this on themselves. She owed them nothing.
Jessa knew Ella would never agree to treat her unless she had David’s support. She couldn’t afford to lose him. On top of that, she planned to use David to make Ella miserable for the rest of her life.
Suddenly, Jessa forced a bright smile. “David, let’s get out of here. I don’t want to stay.”
She slipped her arm through his, giving Ella a pointed look. “Ella, I have some great news for you. I’ll be staying at David’s apartment tonight.”
